On this show the panelists first talk about the choice of Paul Ryan as the Republicans’ Vice President nominee.  The panel agree that Ryan is a free market believer and a small government proponent.  However, his selection doesn’t seem to change the focus on Governor Romney much.

However, his selection did bring a new focus to the issues surrounding Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.  The panel has a lively discussion about the two sides’ different approaches to controlling costs.

The team also discusses the advertisements that the two sides are presenting to the public.  The $716 billion mark is tossed around by both sides.

They touch on Mitt Romney’s tax returns and his claim that he has not paid less that 13% in any of the past 10 years.

On this show the panelists first talk about campaign news.  President Obama campaigned directly against Mitt Romney, attacking him on his record with Bain Capital.  There’s a question whether Bain created jobs as Romney declares or whether Bain destroyed jobs.  Also, the attack on private equity by the President raises questions about the wisdom of the attack. Cory Booker gave a strong statement in favor of private equity firms such as Bain.  The panel debates these issues in a lively discussion.

The group talks about a couple of other campaign issues, such as women and education, before discussing the anxieties over Europe’s economic woes.  Will Greece’s problems be contagious?  They also talk about China’s economic problems and whether they will impact the US.

Next, the panel talks about the CBO report that shows that the top 1% wage earners in America have increased their earnings faster than other wage earners over the past 30 years.  They discuss whether this income inequality becomes corrosive at some point.

Events in Libya, Wisconsin, and the Possible Government Shutdown

The panel began the show by talking about the developments in the Mideast.  The panel generally agrees that they are happy to see the changes coming about there.  To the suggestions that the U.S. should intervene, the panel believes that the U.S. should not do so in this case.  The suggestion is that the events are analogous to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The participants on the show are Robert Scheer who represents the left, Tony Blankley who represents the right, Matt Miller, the moderator, who represents the center, and Arianna Huffington, who represents the progressive blogosphere.  Christia Freeland is sitting in for Arianna today.

They talk also about the Wisconsin Assembly passing the legislation that Governor Walker wishes.  The legislation will now be sent on to the Wisconsin Senate which is missing 14 Democratic members.  The Senate does not have a quorum to be able to vote on the issue.  This may be a prelude to the discussions that will follow and will lead up to the 2012 national elections concerning debt and deficits.

The panel also discusses the Defense of Marriage Act which the Administration recently took away support for.

Lastly, they look ahead to next week when it is possible that there will be a shutdown of the Federal Government due to lack of a new budget or action on the Continuing Resolution.
