Increase Spending to End the Recession

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark Levine hosts the Raucous Caucus with Terry Kester and Garland Nixon from Washington DC.

Their main topics are the economy and whether Republicans will take of the House in November.  They debate whether the Republicans can win 39 seats in November when the Democrats only won 30 seats in 2006.

They talk about how to get out of a recession/depression.  History shows that massive government spending has been successful in doing so.  The way out is for everyone to spend more, not less.  Levine makes the point that when the economy is strong the government should cut spending and pay down debts, but when the economy is weak and people are hungry the government should feed them with increased spending.  When we get back to full employment then we should cut spending.  Spend, baby, spend is his motto for the current situation.

They agree that reform of the filibuster in the Senate is necessary.  The current government is dysfunctional, partly because of the filibuster feature.  Reforming it will bring us back to a rule by the majority.

The group talks to some live guests who have questions for them.

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark Levine covers numerous topics on this show.  He starts out by discussing aspects of the Gulf oil spill.  He talks about Congressman Barton’s apology to BP for the $20 billion fund that was set up.  He gives some history, specifically about the Exxon Valdez spill, to explain why the fund was necessary.

Levine also talks about government spending.  He states that he actually supports more spending to stimulate the economy.  He’s afraid that the Democrats are following Herbert Hoover’s strategy which proved to be ineffective.  He makes the point that he believes it is important to spend now to get jobs back and pay back the deficit later when the economy is healthy.

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark Levine hosts the Leslie Marshall Show while she is away on vacation.

Mark Levine announced that the subject of this 3 hour show will be to examine Israel’s history by working backward.  He began by saying that he is approaching the subject “with trepidation.”  He said that with this show he is “coming out as a Jew” and that he is generally supportive of Israel, though he believes that the government of Israel is not always right.

Mark said that he wants to answer a couple of questions during this show.

1) Why does anyone question why Israel exists?

2) Who are the indigenous people of Palestine?

During the show he commented on the recent remarks on Jews and Palestine by Helen Thomas.

Mark starts with the recent Israeli action against the flotilla of ships that was headed to Gaza and which resulted in the deaths of personnel aboard one of the ships.  Included in his discussion of this event, Mark plays a recording of the warning that was given to the flotilla and their response.

From this recent history Mark works backward in time and makes numerous interesting observations.

Along the way Mark takes questions from interesting callers.

It’s an excellent show for anyone interested in a perspective on the recent conflicts between Israelis, Palestinians, and other neighbors in the region.

Representative John Conyers on Single Payer Health Care

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark and Garland Nixon ask John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, about his single-payer health-care bill.

According to Mark: “How ironic that the elderly are more opposed to “Medicare for All Who Want It” than young people! Because it is precisely young people paying into the system that would strengthen Medicare for those who have it now.

What do Canada, Australia, England, France, Germany, and Japan know that we don’t know? That single-payer is not only cheaper for everyone. It also provides better care. For everyone.”

Dialogue on President Obama’s First Six Months

    Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

    Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

On today’s Dialogue show Garland Nixon, Terry D Kester, and Mark Levine talk about President Obama’s first six months in office.

July 2, 2009 marks the 6 month mark since President Obama took office.  The three panelists have a dialogue about the successes and failures of the first 6 months of President Obama’s administration.

Mark Levine said that the President deserves a B+ to this point.  He says the President is hitting the ground running.  He had a huge hole, represented by the sagging economy, to dig out of.  Levine says that there have been some missteps and some areas where the administration and Congress haven’t moved as fast as expected.

Terry Kester said that he has hopes for President Obama but he is worried.  He said that the President has not led as strongly as needed.  Congress has bogged down trying to create change without strong leadership from President Obama.

Garland Nixon said that the President is trying to hit a home run the first time out, which is unrealistic.

Levine pointed out that the current health reform bills from the House and the Senate represent only the first round, not a finished product.  There are many rounds to come before a final bill is presented.

The panel had a lively discussion on these points and then took calls from the audience.  Audience members talked about health care and several other topics.

Human Rights in Chavez’s Venezuela: Interview with Gonzalo Himiob

    Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

    Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Today Mark Levine talks about human rights issues in Venezuela.  He points out that some dictatorships in South America come disguised as democracies.

Levine’s guest on the program is Gonzalo Himiob Santome, an active human rights lawyer in Venezuela.  Himiob has been called a “traitor to the nation” by the Venezuelan government because of his investigations of human rights violations in the country.  Himiob is a criminal law professor, writer, and lecturer.

Levine and Himiob discuss the history of the democratic process in Venezuela since 1958.  Hugo Chavez, as leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, was elected in 1998 and reelected in 2006.  Levine points out that progressives originally cheered when Chavez came to power because it was believed that he would look out for the interests of poor people of his country.  Unfortunately human rights violations have been an issue throughout his presidency.

Levine asks many questions of Himiob in an effort to understand how Chavez can be acting like a dictator yet be democratically elected.  Himiob talks about the history and results of the Constitutional Assembly that Chavez called, which overturned the previous Constitution.

There was a recall election to take Chavez out of office but the recall election failed.  Two years later he was elected to a second term.  Himiob talks about how this happened.

You’ll enjoy this podcast as Levine and Himiob create clarity about how the current government of Venezuela came to be.

Debate About Iranian Protests and the President’s Health Care Reform

    Friday, June 26th, 2009

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

    Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Today Mark Levine talks about Iran’s election and health care reform with Republican strategist Mark Lane.

They talk about what they think is the right level of intervention by the U.S. after the recent elections and protests.  They agree that U.S. citizens want to be on the side of the Iranian citizens and that Iran is very different from other Muslim nations.  They discuss what President Obama should say and discuss how we should help the Iranian people.

Neither Lane nor Levine are fans of Ayatollah Kameinei.  Lane believes that President Obama needs to make a strong statement.  Levine compares the protests with the protests in China in 1989 (Tianaman Square).  Lane says that this may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to create real change in that part of the world.  They agree that military force should not be used.

Levine and Lane have greater disagreements on health care reform.  Lane believes that it will be difficult to get enough Senate Democrats on board with the President’s health care program.  He says the cost is too high, not enough people are covered, and there aren’t enough votes to pass it.  Levine says that the program is open and transparent and has merit.  The vast majority of Americans believe we need reform.  He says that rejecting the President’s plan means supporting the status quo, which is worse.  Lane talks about aspects of the Republican plan for health care reform and Levine refutes them.  Levine talks about the strong points of the President’s plan.

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

    Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Today Mark Levine talks about Iran and North Korea and the nuclear threats that each poses.  He also talks about Iran’s recent election and the meaning of Mousavi’s protests.

The guest today is Rachel Kleinfeld from the Truman National Security Project.

Levine spends some time talking about the history of North Korea and of Iran before talking to his guest.  His back story for each country is very helpful and interesting.

Rachel Kleinfeld addresses the question of why these nations should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.  She also talks about the small amount of intelligence that we have on North Korea.  How far will China allow North Korea to go?  Does China have the leverage to effect a regime change in North Korea?

Kleinfeld makes the case that we may have to live with a nuclear Iran.
