What US government agency is antiquated and not up to date in communications, management principles, and professional development? Maybe there is more than one but the one under discussion on Chuck Harder?s show, For the People, is the US Customs and Border Patrol. Chuck?s guest is Professor Robert Lee Maril, head of the Sociology Department at East Carolina University. He is also the author of several books; the latest is ?Patrolling Chaos: The US Border Patrol in Deep South Texas?. (You can own this book by clicking here.) Maril spent two years going on patrol with Border Agents in South Texas to see first hand what was transpiring on our border between America and Mexico. What he found is disturbing to say the least: tons of illegal drugs, an average of 500 illegal immigrants die each year, not to mention the risk to the agents. It is an open border, says Maril. ?There is no border except in the minds of politicians.? Chuck asks Maril how President Bush can let this problem go on and Maril?s response is that it continues so to keep corporations happy with low-wage workers. When you listen to this podcast (click here) be sure to keep your ears open for the story of the traveling elephant.

Chuck Harder is upset, to say the least. He says that the blame for the long lines and the high prices at the gas station can be laid directly at the feet of the Democrats who blocked the vote for the oil drilling in the Alaska wild life refuge area. His guest on his StarTalkRadio program is not so quick to say it?s all the Democrats? fault. The guest is Frank Gaffney and he says that blame can be applied to both sides of the aisle. But there is agreement between the two men when it comes to concerns about the state of our country in general. Chuck asks him ?What are we going to do?? and Gaffney (CenterForSecurityPolicy.org) has some ideas. The first one is that we can?t tackle the whole problem at the same time. Just like eating an elephant one bite at a time, we need to address one problem at a time. Gaffney has written a book (War Footing: 10 Steps America Must Take to Prevail in the War for the Free World) that outlines what he recommends. Some of the steps are on the federal level but some are on the individual level, such as we need to make prudent decisions as to where we invest our money. Should we be buying items that are made in a country that is out to do us harm? Click here to own the book and click here to listen to Frank and Chuck?s discussion.

Remember the cartoon called Spy vs Spy? There were two sharp-nosed characters complete with trench coats and hats. One was in black, the other white. The whole premise was based on trying to outdo each other in the business of secret agent stuff. Mostly it was animated slapstick or burlesque. Chuck Harder?s guest today is another TalkStarRadio host, David E. Jones whose show, Galaxy of Science airs on Saturdays at 2:00 EST. David is a patent holder and amateur scientist. On Chuck?s mind today is the array of communication devices that are available- and available for both good people of this world and those who leave a lot to be desired. We have come so far in the area of communication- from Western Union and shortwave radio to cell phones and VOIP and beyond that the question is how can we possible monitor what the bad guys are up to. David, being the inventive guy that he is, has a suggestion. Click here to find out what he says.

Suppose your state gets federal funds for, oh I don?t know-say a skateboard park. Yea! Everybody in your state thinks what a great deal. You are all great people and you deserve it. Then the state next to you gets federal funds for a new roller coaster. Whoa, you think. What kind of waste of American taxpayers? money is that- a roller coaster? This is the dilemma that Joel Miller, guest of Chuck Harder on his StarTalkRadio show expresses when Chuck says what can we do? Chuck?s question echoes the theme of Miller?s book, Size Matters: How Big Government Puts the Squeeze on America?s Families, Finances, and Freedom.
(You can click here to own this book.) The dilemma is because Miller feels that the first step is for the people to speak up when the federal government wants to spend money foolishly and what may seem foolish to one faction may be the best thing going to another. The problem is that freebies are not really free- there are always strings attached. Miller?s thesis is that when there is an increase in the quantity of government programs and regulations, there is a decrease in the quality of life for Americans. Or, another way to put it, as government grows it becomes more myopic. Click here to listen to this podcast.

Robert Thomas Raming is back once more on the Chuck Harder show, For the People. Raming, author of ?War and the Death of the American Dream? is never shy about expressing his opinions and he does not hesitate to do so on this episode. He starts in by saying that Chuck?s previous guest (Richard Troxell of UniversalLivingWae.org) is really just saying mumbo-jumble when it comes to Troxell?s plan. From there he goes on to the fact that it wasn?t any of the government programs started by FDR that got us out of the depression but rather the gearing up for World War II. And don?t think that you won?t hear his views on what he calls the Global Elite and the havoc they are wreaking on the American Worker. A lively hour, for sure. To listen to this podcast, click here. If you wish to own Mr. Raming?s book, you can click here. And here?s Raming?s wish list: 1) US out of the Federal Resesrve
2) US out of the United Nations
3) Secured Borders for US

Could you manage to live on a $5.15/hour wage? Let?s see? at $5.15 for 40 hours that would give you $206.00 a week or $824.00 a month. Now if you lived in Ransom, ND you might be able to just make it if you lived by yourself and lived in an efficiency apartment (one with no separate bedroom). There, an efficiency goes for an average of $255/month. However, if you lived in say, Santa Cruz, CA, you?d be hard pressed to make it at all. There the fair market rent on an efficiency apartment is $1294.00 per month. Ouch. According to Richard Troxell, guest of Chuck Harder on Harder?s show, For the People, there should be a universal living wage based on the fair market rent rate of the various areas. Troxell, who is the National Chairman of the Universal Living Wage Campaign (UniversalLivingWage.org), also says that there will be 4? million homeless this year- and that?s largely due to the fact that people can not afford the cost of housing and that more and more people are only getting minimum wages. By the way,
here in Vermont, in Burlington, average rent rate on an efficiency is $471.00 according to Troxell. That?s over half of what someone would make on minimum wage for 40 hours of work. Click here to listen to this podcast.

If you and I were able to be down on the Gulf Coast we would be able to see first hand the destruction that is still evident from the wrath of Katrina. But I live in the snowy mountains of Vermont and so I depend upon others to keep me up to date with the progress that is going on in the hurricane ravaged areas. What I heard today on Chuck Harder?s show, For the People, is not encouraging. His guest is LaTasha Brown, founder of SOS After Katrina Coalition (SOSAfterKatrina.org) and basically what she says is that nothing has changed in three months. She charges that not only is the situation wrong but that it is immoral. Chuck wants to know how did we come to this. Look at the corporate decisions that were made without regard to the needs of the people, responds LaTasha. Then Chucks asks why our government and FEMA, in particular, are so disconnected. LaTasha proposes three main reasons: 1) the federal government is not prepared; 2) when FEMA came under Homeland Security the mission changed from one of preparedness for natural disasters to one of defense; and 3) leadership. Chuck has one more question- Why hasn?t Haley Barbour, governor of Mississippi, with all of his high-placed connections, been able to bring more relief to his people? Click here to listen to this podcast. Oh, the SOS? It stands for Saving OurSelves .

The World Trade Organization meeting in Hong Kong starts tomorrow so it is appropriate that Chuck Harder, host of For the People on TalkStarRadio, has as his guest. Alan Tonelson. Tonelson is the author of the book, ?The Race to the Bottom: Why a Worldwide Worker Surplus and Uncontrolled Free Trade are Sinking American Living Standards?. Tonelson says that America is now a service economy and that it is a low-paying economy at that. The average earner in America makes only $9.70/hour. At the WTO summit supposedly they?ll be talking about Free Trade but really, says Tonelson, they will be talking about third world countries only. The needs of the American worker are not on the agenda at all. Tonelson (AmericanEconomicAlert.org) and Chuck also discuss the numbers that are floating around about our deficit. $7 trillion is the number often mentioned but when you add in the unfunded programs and those that are not on the books, the number is closer to $43 Trillion. Holy cow! If you wish to own Tonelson?s book, click here. And to hear this podcast, click here. One more bit of food for thought- Tonelson says that this year we will actually import more food than we export.

Being homeless in the United States of America is something most of us would either like to ignore or better yet make believe that it doesn?t even exist. But that?s not the case. William D. Lewis knows. So does Chuck Harder. Both have experienced being homeless first hand. Lewis is the guest of Chuck Harder on his TalkStarRadio program, For the People. Lewis has written a book titled ?Imagine Losing Everything?Except Your Mind?.
(You can own this book by clicking here.) As he is sharing with Chuck some of his personal story, you are hit with the poignancy of the situation and realize that we have a long way to go to eradicate this problem in our country. Katrina made many people more aware of the conditions that exist but they exist in every corner of our country, in your town and mine. Lewis shares an insight that I never thought about in regards to the evacuation of the people of New Orleans. Many of the people that stayed behind were poor. Why didn?t they leave? Maybe it had something to do with the fact that welfare checks come on the first of the month. Katrina arrived on the 29th of August. By the end of the month, many people on welfare have little food and even less money. Evacuate? How? Click here to listen to this podcast.

The state of health in our health care system is on the agenda today. Actually, it is probably more accurate to say the state of ill health. The guest of Chuck Harder is Colin Gordon, PhD. who is a professor at the University of Iowa and author of a book titled ?Dead on Arrival: The Politics of Health Care in Twentieth Century America?. Chuck takes the mic (it is his show) and tells the tale of his woes with his health insurance when he suffered his accident in 1999. Not a pretty story. When Chuck talks about how his HMO either refused certain treatments or delayed through red tape other treatments, it brings no signs of astonishment from Gordon- he?s heard about those things many times before. Here are a couple of the statements that Gordon shares with Chuck and with us: We live under the illusion that people can get all the health insurance they need through their work- but we do not live in that world any more. And?We spend as much in public money on health care as the other civilized countries plus we spend the same amount or more in private money and just look at the results. If you wish to own Prof. Gordon?s book, click here. To listen to this podcast and find out what else the professor shares, click here.

Can we get out of Iraq honorably? That?s the question to Peter de Krassel, author of ?Custom Maid for New World Disorder? and guest of Chuck Harder on his show, For the People. De Krassel?s answer is ?yes, but not with the policies that are currently in place in Washington?. He also says that he believes that Iraq should be three separate countries-one for the Kurds, one for the Shiites, and one for the Sunnis. He believes that Iraq is a manufactured country; that these three factions were put together in one country knowing that there would be dissention (to put in mildly) amongst them. And he also opines that France should consider creating a ?Palestine? for the increasing number of Muslims there. Click here to listen to what de Krassel thinks what will happen in Asia (it has to do with partnering with the country that Chuck feels is overtaking America) and you can click here to own his book.

Remember the old song, ?Row, Row, Row your Boat?? Remember the line about ?life is but a dream?? Life probably doesn?t feel much like a dream to many Americans right now and their rowboats seem to be springing leaks. That?s the message that Liz Stanton of United for a Fair Economy (FairEconomy.org) brings to Chuck Harder?s show, For the People. The only things that have kept the economy afloat in the last few years are the low interests rates, the real estate boom, credit cards, loans on car titles (relatively new) and pay-day loans- pretty much what we used to call loan sharks. Our credit morass has made us ?indentured servants? says Chuck. Liz has some strong thoughts about the theory that tax cuts create jobs- no way, Jose. And she also has some thoughts about what might help the situation. Click here to listen to her suggestions so that there are fewer yachts and more seaworthy rowboats.

Chuck Harder invites Frosty (no, I did not make up the name even if it is freezing outside) Wooldridge to his show for a discussion of immigration problems and concerns in America. Frosty, says Chuck, is an immigration expert. Chuck starts this program by asking what Frosty?s top five worries are regarding immigration and Frosty does not hesitate but shoots them out with rapid fire precision.
1) the rate of immigration (4 million a year- 1 million, legally; 3 million, illegally) is exceeding the rate of assimilation
2) the language crises- multiple languages are creating enclaves where there are, in effect, small countries within our country of America
3) our education systems are collapsing
4) crime rate is increasing at alarming proportions
5) there is a population crises in America that does not have to do with the number of births per year and we have exceeding the ability of the land to sustain us .
These are only the starting points for a fast-paced and full episode. Click here to listen to the entire podcast.

Do you remember the fairy tale of the king that had a look-alike? The two changed places for a while and the king lived with the common people. It was an eye-opening experience for the royal. Now, what would happen if every business owner had to live in the community where the business was located? Do you think there might be more accountability to the people in that community than if the owner lived somewhere else, like maybe even in another country? Do you suppose that if the owner lived where his employees lived that he or she might have more understanding, compassion, and willingness to make sure that things were as good as they could be? That?s kind of the proposition of Dr. David Korten, author of ?When Corporations Rule the World?, and guest of Chuck Harder. Unfortunately, we do live in a fairy tale world and it is unlikely that huge corporation heads are going to give up their vaulted life style. So how, asks Chuck, can we change the way corporations treat their employees and change the influence they have on our economic system? Click here to listen to what Dr. Korten
suggests. If you wish to own his book, you may click here.
