Big Government-Big Money

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Durham Ellis is a real estate broker as well as the author of a book titled ?Big Government?Poor Grandchildren?. He is also the guest of Chuck Harder on this segment of the ?For the People? show. Ellis is, obviously, not in favor of big government. As a matter of fact he says that the government keeps spending money on non-productive and counter-productive plans and programs. It?s the philosophy of ?throw some money at a bad idea and it will get better?. He also believes that if we stay on this path, given enough time, we will destroy ourselves. Chuck adds that the government is great on rhetoric but not on delivering and Durham chimes in by adding that the federal government is great at raising money but not great on services or education. Click here to own Ellis?s book and click here to listen to this podcast as Ellis suggests that we should eliminate the Department of Education since it not only does no good but is illegal to boot.

Roller Coaster Money

Friday, March 17th, 2006

Today?s guest on Chuck Harder?s ?For the People? show is Josh Bivens, researcher and economist at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI.org). It is only logical, therefore, that the topic under discussion is the economic state of the Union. Jobs? A very slight decrease in the unemployment figures. But what kind of jobs are they, Chuck asks? Well, they aren?t the better paying jobs. What about the types of industries, queries Chuck? Are they in the manufacturing arena where those jobs would help the national economy get back to being a value-based economy? Nope, says Josh. How about the gap between the rich and the poor- which way is that going, asks Chuck? Getting wider every day. Is there any good news? Click here to listen to what Josh says.

Parallel R&D

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

My mom had lots of pithy sayings that guided as we were growing up and followed us as we became adults. One of those was ?Don?t put all your eggs in one basket? which translates, succinctly, into ?diversify?. This is one of the messages that Tom Mast shares with the listeners of Chuck Harder?s show, For the People. Mast is a mechanical engineer with experience in the oil fields. He is also the author of the book, ?Over a Barrel: A Simple Guide to the Oil Shortage?. (You can own this book by clicking here.) Right up front, Mast says we need to stop depending upon Detroit to get us out of the energy problems we have. China may have 5 high school dropouts who just designed a car that gets 50 mpg and runs on soybean oil but don?t expect that type of thing from Detroit. Chuck asks Mast why that type of innovation has not come forth from US designers and Mast replies that it?s not a lack of ability but a lack of motivation that has put us behind the eight ball, so to speak. What we need to have done already ?like 30 years ago- was to invest in research and development of new alternative energy sources. This did not happen, obviously, so we must step forward and do it now. We must look to solutions that will in all probability take several years to come to fruition, but then, we have no choice. And we need to be working on parallel plans and sources. If we invest all of our resources and time into only one at a time we will never get ourselves out of the energy hole we?ve dug. We must put our ?eggs? into several ?baskets? so we can get a better return. Click here to listen to this podcast and find out what Mast says about our short-sighted politicians and what Chuck?s plan is to save energy. Here?s a hint: school age kids will love it.

Boston Tea Party Again?

Monday, March 13th, 2006

I think it?s safe to say that none of us directly remember the Boston Tea Party but I am sure that many of us remember the battle cry of ?No Taxation without Representation?. According to the guest of Chuck Harder on his show, For the People, that may be a phrase that we hear again. The guest is Cliff Kincaid of America?s Survival (USASurvival.org and AIM.org). What Kincaid is referring to is the push for global taxes. This, he says, is with the whole-hearted support of Secretary-General Kofi Annan of the United Nations. Actually, Kincaid says that Annan and other UN officials are in back of this. What types of things might be taxed? The list includes such things as taxation on aviation fuel, airline tickets, and an international ?currency transaction tax?. President Bush will be attending a conference in Monterey, Mexico this coming week, organized by the UN, called the International Conference on Financing for Development. Also participating in the conference will be 50 world leaders as well as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization. Hmm. Click here to listen to this podcast.

The Dr. Bob Martin Show

Sunday, March 12th, 2006

This issue of the Dr. Bob Martin show has something for everybody from antidepressants to being lonely to fatal car crashes.

Dr. James Blumenthal, a professor of Medical Psychology at Duke University says an unexpected finding about antidepressants is a death boost risk.

We have millions of auto accidents in the U.S. every year, seat belts can save the lives of many folks. However there are new findings that the obese and the skinny maybe more prone to fatal car crashes.

Tinnitus or ringing in the ears affects at least 50 million people in the U.S. (I happen to be one of those affected.) Now there is evidence that tinnitus can cause another problem (As if I needed another one) Dr. Bob referred to it as ‘getting stuck in stupid’.

At least a third of adults say they are lonely and some say the forties are the loneliest years. Researchers claim that loneliness can increase the risk of several health conditions.

Coffee and heart problems are in the news again. Do you need a caffeine fix to get yourself out the door in the morning? It appears if your body breaks down caffeine to slowly you have a 64% higher risk of heart problems.

Better click here to listen to all this and other good health advice on Dr. Bob’s show.

Are You A Squirrel Or An Ostrich?

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Maybe instead of one of the animals listed above, you are a coaster or perhaps a high roller. How about a desperado or a striver? The guest of Chuck Harder on this segment of the For the People show is Jordan Goodman, author of a book titled ?Master Your Money Type: Using Your Financial Personality to Create a Life of Wealth and Freedom?. He says that once you determine your money personality you can use that information to help you learn how to gain in the financial area of your life. Goodman also gives this tip: keep track of your credit rating. You can check on your credit number without it affecting your rating but applying for credit will lower your number. There is a difference. If you?d like to own Goodman?s book, you can click here. Want to know what Chuck?s money personality is? Squirrel. Want to know mine? I?ll never tell. Vintage Chuck

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

Every once in a while, Chuck Harder is his own guest on his ?For the People? show. And when he does, the listener is in for a treat. You may not always agree with Chuck (and that?s ok) but you will always be stimulated by what he shares. In this segment Chuck talks about what he considers to be one of the biggest problems in our society- instant gratification or what Chuck calls ?plug in and play?. I use to work in a retail business. We had a sign that explained to the employees why some people acted the way they did. It said ?I Want It, and I Want It Now?. That?s the same type of mentality that Chuck says is prevalent in our country and that is leading us to many of the problems we have. What else does Chuck think is causing many of the troubles in our youth? Try cable TV. Give a listen (click here) to Chuck on a roll.

You Can’t Take It With You

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

We?ve probably all heard the adage that only two things are certain-death and taxes (courtesy of Benjamin Franklin). Franklin was no lover of taxes and neither is Dick Patten- especially when death and taxes are linked in the same sentence. Patten is the Executive Officer of American Family Business Institute (NoDeathTax.org) and is Chuck Harder?s guest on his show, For the People. The Death Tax ? or more properly, the Federal Estate Tax- is a tax levied against an estate left when the person dies. What it really means is that the family is responsible for paying the taxes. This is especially hard on family businesses. As a matter of fact, while listening to this podcast, you will hear some downright scary stories. If the IRS determines that a business is worth more (assessed more) than the family believes, it is up to the family to take the IRS to court and will still have to pay the taxes first. And all within 90 days of the assessment. What happens if the family can not come up with the taxes? Click here to find out.

Updated Iran Timetable

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

It?s no surprise that many think Iran will ?go nuclear?. What is a little surprising in this podcast of the Chuck Harder show is how soon the guest on the show, Ilan Berman, believes that ?nuclear Iran? will be a reality- 1 to 2 years. Berman is the VP for Policy for American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC.org). Chuck and Ilan say that our government thinks it will take longer before Iran has nuclear weapons and that we have plenty of time to stop them. But that is not what Berman believes. Chuck asks about the possibility of stopping them as we did with Kadafi. But Berman feels that they will not be as Libya was with the bunker buster bombs and roll over and play dead. He indicated that a non-military plan would be more effective in order to facilitate a regime change.

Trouble Within, Trouble Without

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

Back with Chuck Harder today on his ?For the People? show is guest Dr. Paul Craig Roberts. Dr. Roberts is, among other things, a syndicated columnist and former Assistant Secretary on Economic Policy under the Reagan Administration. Chuck starts the ball rolling by asking Dr. Roberts? opinions on the national debt, the ports sale situation and the illegal immigration across our borders. Here is some of what Dr. Roberts said:
Concerning the debt- How long Asian countries continue to bankroll our economy depends on when they have had enough of it or until they can push us aside.
Regarding the ports- The terrorists don?t need the ports to enter; they can get in anyway they want.
About the borders and illegal immigration- well, he did not really get into that because?
What?s really on his mind- the threat of terrorists within. ?The terrorists are within our own government.? He believes that our civil liberties and our Constitution are under attack. And he is very concerned that we have a President who seems to feel he is above the law. Roberts asks why we are deflected to worry about 3rd world Muslim threats when there is no huge threat to the structure of our country from that source. People are blind, he says, to what is going on because they have been made to be afraid of this outside threat when they should be afraid of the internal threat. This podcast is a real ?Whoa! What did he just say?!?? interview. Click here to listen.
