Frankly Speaking

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Dr. Bradford Frank is back as a guest on Chuck Harder?s show, ?For the People?. Frank, who has a book titled ?Terror Unleashed: The Coming Bird Flu, Oil, Terrorist and Financial Crisis? (Click here to own the book) is concerned about more than bird flu in this episode. What he is concerned about is the lack of information and the misinformation that our government dispenses. An example he cites is the recent ABC TV movie about bird flu. Seems the government had to give the ok about some of the medical aspects. OK, so why is Frank upset? In the movie, with the government?s approval, people were instructed to use surgical masks as a safe way to protect against bird flu. Not true, says Frank. What is needed are N-95 masks. Chuck wants to know why the wrong type of mask was promoted and Frank believes that, since there are not anywhere enough of the N-95 masks available, the government opts to ?keep the people from panicking?. Frank?s gripe is that our government is lying to us and that is never OK. Click here to listen to what else Frank has to share on this podcast, including information on Alzheimer?s, Autism, ADDH, and the federal deficit.

“Pathetic. That’s what it is. Pathetic.”

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts is a frequent guest on the ?For the People? show, hosted by Chuck Harder. He is a syndicated columnist and served as assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy in 1981-82. In past shows Roberts has expressed his views of what is not right with our country but today?s show made me think of Eeyore, the donkey from Winnie the Pooh. Roberts is a very intelligent, well-educated man, and compassionate. He obviously cares deeply about this country. Today?s episode reflected his seeming despair over the state of affairs as he sees them. ?I see no leadership? in this country, ?just special interest groups?. ?No one is benefiting from the Bush Administration except for the Special Interest Groups.? ?The government is independent of the people.? When Chuck asks Roberts, ?Is there going to be a future for us?? Roberts reply is ?Chuck, I don?t know- I don?t know what to say?? Click here to listen to this podcast.

Remember When…

Friday, May 26th, 2006

I don?t know how many of you are old enough to remember the early television show called ?I Remember Mama?. It was based on the reflections of the eldest daughter of a Norwegian-American family in 1910 in San Francisco. If you remember the show at all, you may also recollect that Mama was played by the actress Peggy Wood who would later star as the Mother Superior in ?The Sound of Music?. Now, you may want to know what all this has to do with the Chuck Harder show, ?For the People?. Well, this half hour is reminisce time with Chuck and Victor Ives. Victor is a legendary broadcaster with experience both in front of the mike and behind the mike. He is also the CEO and headcheese (his words, not mine) of TalkStarRadio. It would be easy to dismiss this episode as just two old friends talking but there is an underlying message. With the way most radio stations are now, there are very few with live people at the stations that could get on the airwaves in case of a national or local emergency. That is a frightening thought, as Chuck points out. Click here to listen to this podcast.

It’s Super Power!

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

What?s taller than a building? Slower than a bird in flight? Able to produce enough power to provide enough fuel for our country? Look, out on the plains, it?s fields of 5 megawatt wind generators! This is according to the guest of Chuck Harder on his ?For the People? show on TalkStarRadio. His guest is Harry Braun, an energy and environmental analyst for over 30 years. Braun also was an independent Presidential candidate at one time. But today, Chuck and Harry are mostly talking about the power that can be gained by going to hydrogen power through the use of 5 megawatt wind generators. Braun believes that 2 million of these giant wind turbines would effectively replace our dependence on foreign oil. Braun (PhoenixProjectFoundation.us) says that all the parts necessary to produce these ?windmills? can be manufactured in our existing American car factories. How soon does he think this could be accomplished? In wartime speed- between 5 and 10 years. Braun has a book titled ?The Phoenix Project: Shifting from Oil to Hydrogen? that you may own by clicking here. Braun also wants to debunk the theory that migratory birds are destroyed by these wind giants. He says that the bigger the blades (and some are the wing span of a 747) the slower they go and birds can very easily see them and avoid them. He does get into politics a little bit with a rather scathing commentary on Congressional members. Click here to listen to what he calls them and to hear the entire podcast.

Politcally Warm

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Here?s a new slant on global warming presented by Dr. Pat Michaels on the ?For the People? show hosted by Chuck Harder. Michaels (from the Dept. of Environmental Sciences at the University of VA) says that global warming is occurring but it?s not a cause to throw your hands up in the air and bemoan the end of the world. There is a modest warming occurring and yes, some of it is due to green house gas emissions by the people of the world. However, he believes that it is happening at such a slow and constant rate that the world climate will be able to acclimate to the changes that do occur. So why is this global warming issue getting so much press and attention? Michaels says that it has become a political issue, one that different sides try to use for their own benefit. As a matter of fact, he says an example of that is the new documentary about Al Gore called Inconvenient Truth. Michaels retorts that the film inconveniently focuses on untruths. Hmmm. Michaels has written a book called ?Meltdown: The Predictable Distortion of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media? which you may own by clicking here. Fence Straddling

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Have you ever heard of a 2nd to Die Life Insurance Policy? Me neither, or rather not until I heard Dick Patten of the American Family Business Institute (NoDeathTax.org). Patten, who is the executive director of the Institute, is the guest of Chuck Harder on this episode of ?For the People?. This 2nd to Die thing is a policy some family business member take out (at a huge premium) to protect themselves when the head of the family business dies and the family is faced with having to pay 40% of the value to the Feds because of the Death Tax. Patten also wants people to know that there is still time to persuade the fence sitters in the Senate to repeal this Death Tax. The vote will be in the first or second week of June, he says, and if people would call and leave a message for their Senator(s) that it might be the means to bring this tax to a close. Click here to listen to this podcast and to find out if some of those fence sitters are from your state.

ZZZzzz

Friday, May 19th, 2006

You remember Rip Van Winkle, don?t you? He was the literary figure who fell asleep in the days before the American Revolution and when he awoke, twenty years later, he was totally unaware that the American Revolution had occurred. It did not make him very popular with his fellow townsmen when he hailed Geo. III. Enter now the Rip Van Winkle Award. This, according to Chuck Harder?s guest, Robert Goldsborough of Americans for Immigration Control (ImmigrationControl.com) is going to be awarded to President George W. Bush. Why? Because it?s as if, says Goldsborough, the President has been sleeping for twenty years and just awoke to the illegal immigration problems.
Bush, says Goldsborough, is out of touch with reality- with the reality of the farmers and ranchers, and the sheriffs of those towns on or near the Mexican border. If Goldsborough is not fond of what our President has done or not done on this matter, he is just as upset with those on the Hill. He states that they are narcissistic; that their heads are so swollen they have trouble getting through a doorway. Click here to listen to this podcast and to hear what Goldsborough suggests might make a difference in the immigration conundrum.

Riding Down the Highway

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

OK. You?re cruising down the highway and everything is going along great when you see a sign that says ?Toll Booth Ahead?. All right. No big deal. You come up to the booth and take out your money or E-Z Pass. However, the toll booth person stops you with a question. ?So, how do you really feel about paying this toll?? he asks. If you respond positively he waves you through but if you grumble about the cost, he tells you to go to the end of the live. The others have priority over you even if you reached the booth first. This may sound a little far-fetched but this scenario may play itself out on another kind of highway- the internet highway. So says the guest of Chuck Harder on his ?For the People? show. The guest is Dr. Conrad Miller, author of the book, ?The Most Important Issues that Americans Think They Know Enough About?. (You can click here to own the book.) The first topic under discussion is COPE (Communications Opportunity Promotion and Enhancement Act of 2006). Chuck thinks that the name is not a true indication of what it really means. Miller (CrestOfTheWave.com) says that the internet is a dangerous place and that with this bill, it is becoming more so. He feels that it is a way for Big Business to simply take over the internet, squeezing out the average user. Also on the agenda for Chuck and the good doctor is the issue of nuclear waste. And Chuck has an interesting thought- no matter where it is stored, eventually the container holding the waste will disintegrate and then what? Click here to listen to this podcast.

How Do You Spell Relief?

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

The President signed into law today a $70 Billion tax cut bill. Many Republicans are touting it as the way to help all Americans and all Republicans are probably hoping it changes the minds of many Americans about the Republican Party in general. Democrats are mostly opposed saying that any benefits will mostly affect the wealthy. Time will tell but if you want to hear some discussion on this subject, click here to listen to this podcast of Chuck Harder and his guest, Sam Batkins of the National Taxpayers Union (NTU.org). Batkins dissects the bill and Chuck asks the questions. Here are some thoughts from Batkins: Affordable housing all along the East Coast is a problem and many of those who work in a city can not afford to live there. Regarding Congress, Batkins bluntly states that Congress spends like there are no consequences to their spending. And Chuck plaintively queries, What about our children and grandchildren?

Painful November

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Understand that the Senate voted to build a 370 mile long fence along the American-Mexican border. That?s supposed to keep out the illegal immigrants. Jon Dougherty has some thoughts to share about the illegal immigration problem. He is the guest of Chuck Harder on the ?For the People? show on TalkStarRadio. Dougherty of Freedom Alliance (FreedomAlliance.org) is the author of ?Illegals: The Imminent Threat Posed by Our Unsecured US-Mexico Border? (you can own it by clicking here). He believes that the Bush Administration will do something about the problem but that it will probably not be effective. What he does say will work is for the American people to make it ?painful? for those in power by voting them out of office come November. Click here to listen to this podcast.

It Gives Me Fever

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Parts of New England are awash with heavy rains. Is it due to global warming? Florida is having a dry spell that is contributing to the wildfires they have been experiencing. Is it due to global warming? Parts of the West were bombarded with one storm after the other this winter. Was it due to global warming? The guest of Chuck Harder on his ?For the People? show doesn?t think so because he says that the global warming we are hearing about is actually just the normal cycle in weather patterns. The guest is Dr. Jay Lehr of the Heartland Institute (HeartLand.org) where he is a Senior Fellow with an area of expertise in science and environment. Here is part of what Lehr shares with Chuck and his listeners: There was a normal warming trend from 1880 to 1940 and then again from the 1970?s to 1998. In between there was no warming of the earth and there were plenty of reasons why that would have continued if global warming was due to the increase of greenhouse gasses caused by man. Instead, says Lehr, global warming is a natural phenomenon that has been used as a politicized issue to promote a hidden political agenda. Why would someone (or some ones) do that? Lehr says that it is a way to move toward a need for a central government ?a world order. Chuck says he?s scared of what is happening. How about you? Click here to listen to this podcast.

Tappity-Tap

Monday, May 15th, 2006

There is a dark period in our history when war time hysteria led to the internment of over 120,000 people of Japanese descent in what were euphemistically called Relocation Centers. One would hope that those types of activities by our government would never happen again. However, there are some who believe that internment camps are being readied even now. One of those who believes that to be so is the guest of Chuck Harder on this episode of Chuck Harder?s ?For the People?. The guest is Robert Thomas Raming, a frequent guest and author of ?War and Death of the American Dream?. Why are these camps being either built or reinstituted? Remember reading or hearing about the NSA tapping millions of Americans? phones? Well, Raming feels that the agency is collecting data on everybody who disagrees with the Admistration in power and that there may very well be a time in the near future, when all who are on a certain list might just find themselves ?relocated?. You can click here to own Raming?s book and click here to listen to what else Raming and Chuck have on their minds.

Crisis at the Border

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Last Fall, Vermont was visited by Minutemen. These were not re-enactors of the Boston Tea Party. These were people who have dedicated themselves to watching the borders of our country to keep illegal immigrants from crossing. Problem was, they were not welcomed in Vermont by many of the local people and for the most part, they were unable to tell exactly where the border was between Vermont and our neighbor to the North, Canada. On Chuck Harder?s show For the People on TalkStarRadio, there is a guest with a little different view on what needs to be done to protect our borders. His name is Neville Cramer. He is a retired, Special Agent from the INS who has written a book called ?Fixing the INSanity-America?s Immigration Crisis?. Cramer says that we have lost total control of our borders but that putting more agents on the job is not the answer. Chuck wants to know why President Bush is not moving on this problem and Cramer declares that Bush is getting lots of pressure from the business community to leave the whole issue alone. Cramer has some specific ideas as to how to take control of our borders and ?fix the immigration crisis? and you can click here to listen to what he recommends. If you wish to own his book, here is his suggestion: go to his website (FixingTheInSanity.com) and email him telling him about this show. If you do, he?ll send you an autographed copy and give the proceeds to Chuck for the For the People show.

Help Wanted- in India

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Map of IndiaLast June about 3000 IT (information technology) workers for Wachovia in NC were told that they would be losing their jobs. Was it because the company was not doing well and they needed to downsize? Not according to Ron Hira, guest of Chuck Harder on Harder?s For the People show. The reason Wachovia gave the announcement to its employees is that the jobs they were doing were going to be outsourced to India. Hira is an assistant professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and is considered an expert on outsourcing. He has testified twice to Congress about outsourcing and the impact that it has on workers and the economy. Hira has written a book with his brother, Anil Hira (also a Ph.D and a professor) titled ?Outsourcing America: What?s Behind Our National Crisis and How We Can Reclaim American Jobs?. (To own the book, click here.) Chuck asks Hira about his experience in testifying before Congress and Hira responds by saying that Congress simply doesn?t care about outsourcing. It seems it?s not on their radar screen. Is there any hope, queries Chuck? There are a few who understand the importance of the issue but you may be surprised as to who is on the list and who is not. Potpourri

Friday, May 5th, 2006

Remember Ross Perot? Yes, he was the Texan who made a presidential run in 1992 and 1996 as a third party candidate. Now, do you remember who his running partner was in 1996? The man?s name is Pat Choate. He actually is well known in some circles for much more than Ross Perot?s choice for a VP; he is a political analyst, think tank strategist, a political economist, and an author. And he is the guest on Chuck Harder?s show, For the People. Chuck starts off this hour by asking Pat if Ross Perot was running today for President, would he win? Pat?s answer is that it might very well happen because people are more aware now of what is going on in the country. Second question from Chuck: why is Wall Street so excited right now and the answer is that Wall Street is only excited when their returns are up and they are up now. Pat says that Wall Street cares nothing for American workers or the country- in other words, it?s the almighty dollar that matters and it matters not where it comes from. This is a fast paced show and moves from the economy to what the Arab nations really think about Bush to an agricultural deal that will deal a death blow to farmers to Lou Dobbs to immigration policies. Pat?s latest book, ?Hot Properties: The Stealing of Ideas in an Age of Globalization? is available by clicking here. Click here to listen to what Pat says about all the topics listed above and to hear his 4 point plan to take careof illegal immigration.

Broken-hearted

Friday, May 5th, 2006

There is nothing wishy-washy, tentative, or shy about Chuck Harder?s guest on his show, For the People. The guest is Rev. David Berman, author of ?Wake Up and Smell the Truth?. This is a man who is visibly upset about the way he sees this country deteriorating. Chuck mentions that he is sure that all those that supported President Bush in the last election must be terribly heart-broken. Berman?s response is: ?We are heartbroken by a lot of things George Bush has done?. Berman is unabashedly a conservative Christian who says that we are losing our country because we have lost our belief in our nation?s founding principles. His book is written to give people a way to combat what he sees as the breakdown of this country?s morals. To own his book you can click here. Berman also says that as a minister he is not allowed to voice his political support from the pulpit but that is not going to stop him. I think the term for one like him use to be a firebrand. Some Good News

Friday, May 5th, 2006

Sometimes when you listen to Chuck Harder it seems that there is nothing right with the world or that there is nothing good happening. But hold on! In this episode of For the People Chuck has as his guest Nancy Oliver, an economy developer for Hamilton County in Florida. What the good word? It looks like Gate Petroleum will be opening an ethanol plant in the county bring with it about 50 good paying jobs. This will be about a $80 million project. They will be using wood chips to fuel the plant and use corn trucked in from the Midwest to make the ethanol. What makes this important for all to hear is this- all the different agencies involved in the process set down together to speed along the process instead of each one doing there own thing. Think there is a message in that for all communities?
Remember, please, that I said some good news in the title. The second half of this show Chuck reads an article written by Paul Craig Roberts. Roberts is a Republican but there are some harsh, hard words here regarding the current Administration. Chuck adds his occasional comments to the article as well. So, it?s a mixed bag, folks. The good along with the not so good.

DDT to the Rescue

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Does anybody out there remember reading ?Silent Spring? by Rachel Carson? I vaguely remember having to read it in, I think, some long-forgotten science class. Any way, the claims in this book were largely responsible for the banning of DDT, an effective, organic pesticide that was discovered by Muller, a Swiss chemist. Muller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1948 for his discovery. DDT was used to kill mosquitoes that spread malaria and typhus. That is, DDT was used until a public outcry arose from the claim that DDT caused cancer and that it was responsible for the thinning of eggshells (a negative influence on the environment). Now along comes Steve Milloy of Junk Science (JunkScience.com). Steve visits with host Chuck Harder and says that those claims are false. The banning of DDT which first occurred here in the US was followed by the banning of its use in many countries. And what transpired after that was, especially in 3rd world countries, an explosion of malaria and related diseases. Does Steve profit if DDT is manufactured again? No. The only manufacturer of DDT is WHO (World Health Organization). But Steve makes no bones about saying that DDT has received a bum rap. Click here to listen to this podcast.

The Lie about Nafta

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

There?s a new book out. It?s called ?Hostile Takeover: How Big Money and Corruption Conquered Our Government- and How We Take It Back?. The author is David Sirota (DavidSirota.com), who is a political strategist, and he is the guest on Chuck Harder?s show, For the People. According to Sirota, since NAFTA was enacted, there are 20 million more Mexicans living in poverty. Could this be part of the reason that we are seeing an increase in the number of illegal immigrants from across our border? Sirota says that we were lied to about Free Trade and there is nothing but agreement from Chuck on that score since he has argued against it from its inception. The Free Trade policy is causing us to erode from within. What if other countries were to pay their workers a decent wage? Can you see a decrease in the number of illegal immigrants to the US? Would there be less outsourcing? These are both probable outcomes says Sirota. He also believes that our trade policy should be a center-front issue instead of being pushed to the ?back of the bus?. So what can we do- Is there any hope, wonders Chuck? Sirota believes that there is an awakening and that people are beginning to take notice of what is happening but if we wait ten years there will not be time to turn this country around. I think part of the answer is in the last phrase of the title of his book- How We Take It Back. Click here to own the book and click here to listen to this podcast.

A Little Bird Told Me

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Josh Bevins of Economic Policy Institute (EPInet.org) is back as a guest of Chuck Harder on his For the People show and Chuck has a question for Josh. If the economy is doing better, how come so many people are broke? And Josh, being an economist and an expert in international trade and macroeconomics, has an answer. The economy is doing better on the corporate level- that?s where the profits are. But the profits are not trickling down to the average American. He says the distribution is not even. No kidding. Chuck has a thought or two to add. He asks if Josh has ever heard about a canary being used in the coal mines to provide a warning of bad air? Seems that if the air quality is poor, it effects a bird before it will effect a man so old time miners often would bring a canary into the mines with them. If the bird succumbed, then the miners learned to vacate the area immediately. Well, Chuck says he has found an economic canary and you won?t believe what it is. Click here to find out.
