THE FIRST LADY:  This is one of our favorite times of year.  And we’re so fortunate to be able to celebrate it together in this wonderful home.

This is the “People’s House.”  So Barack and I try to open it to as many people as we can, especially during the holiday season.

This month, more than 100,000 Americans have passed through these halls.  And the idea behind this year’s theme, “Simple Gifts,” is that the greatest blessings of all are the ones that don’t cost a thing – the comfort of spending time with loved ones…the freedoms we enjoy as Americans… and the joy we feel upon giving something of ourselves.

So in this time of family, friends, and good cheer; let’s also be sure to look out for those who are less fortunate, who’ve hit a run of bad luck, or who are hungry and alone this holiday season.

The Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Kristi Noem of South Dakota. Noem said that while stopping all the tax hikes scheduled for January 1st is an important first step that will prevent American jobs from being destroyed, more needs to be done to reduce the uncertainty facing family-owned small businesses, including cutting spending and repealing the job-killing health care law.

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama strongly urged both parties in Congress to pass the compromise on tax cuts, unemployment insurance, and job creation. Not doing so would hurt the middle class, those struggling to find work, and the economy itself.

“Right now, there’s a big debate taking place in Washington that will affect how much you pay in taxes next year.  If Congress doesn’t act, tax rates will automatically go up for just about everyone in our country.  Typical middle class families would end up paying an extra $3,000.

That’s unacceptable to me.  Not when we know that it’s the middle class that was hit the hardest by the recession.  And not when we know that taking this money out of the pockets of working people is exactly the wrong thing to do to get our economy growing faster.  Economists tell us that this tax hike on working families could actually cost us well over a million jobs.

That’s why I’ve been fighting so hard to cut middle class taxes.  And that’s why I brought both Democrats and Republicans to the table – to put together a compromise, and work through our differences, so we could get this done.

Left, Right and Center is a weekly half-hour radio broadcast and podcast produced by KCRW in Santa Monica.

Miller begins the show by pointing out that this has been a big week as a result of the Bush tax cut compromise that has been proposed.  Is this a second stimulus package that the Democrats never could have gotten otherwise?  Tony disagrees that it is a large stimulus; he thinks it is only a small one.  Arianna believes that nothing about this bill will stimulate the economy, it will only increase spending.

Next, the panel talks about the Wikileaks controversy.  Transparency versus government secrecy.  What is the real character of Julian Assange?  There’s plenty of interesting controversy over this issue.  Is this a good example of the exercise of the free press?

They also talk about the START treaty and whether we will pass the treaty.  It’s an understanding that we have been wanting for decades but will we get around to passing it?

Lastly they talk briefly about the demonstrations going on in Europe and how one recently resulted in an attack on Prince Charles.

The participants on the show are Robert Scheer who represents the left, Tony Blankley who represents the right, Matt Miller, the moderator, who represents the center, and Arianna Huffington, who represents the progressive blogosphere.

At the end of this entertaining show the participants each have a 30 second rant to summarize the issue that each sees as most significant.

Agop Kayayan a Lebanese of Armenian descent studied agriculture at the American University of Beirut ( 1962-1965) and then finished a M.Sc. in Rural Sociology(1965-1968). After working for two years at the UN Office in Beirut, he obtained a Ph.D. at the Ohio State University. He worked at the Ministry of Agriculture in the area of agricultural policies to reduce the price of staple foods. After that he spent twenty two wonderful years with UNICEF in Brazil ( 1978-1980), Guatemala Area Office for Central America ( 1980-1990), and back to Brazil from 1991 to 1998.

After early retirement from UNICEF, Agop founded an NGO called Institute of Child and Adolescent Rights. He served as board member of various Brazilian NGOs. At present Agop does consulting work in the areas of policy elaboration, negotiating for children’s and women’s rights, and fundraising.

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Mark Levine hosts the Raucous Caucus with Terry Kester and Garland Nixon from Washington DC.

The raucous caucus talk about their disappointment with President Obama because he compromised with the Republicans on the tax bill.

Nixon contends that President Obama gave up too easily, without much fight.  Kester feels that President Obama betrayed the Democratic party by ignoring their wishes.  Kester feels that the President has reached out to the middle at the expense of infuriating the Democratic base.  Levine makes the point that the House should have voted on this issue before the election and then fought for the passage of the bill as originally formed.

The panel talks to some interesting phone callers, listening to their disappointments and answering questions.

“Hi, this is Joe Biden.  I’m filling in for President Obama this weekend because he’s on his way back from Afghanistan, where he was spending some time with the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.

It’s tough to be far from home during the holidays, especially in a warzone, so he wanted to be there in person to thank them on behalf of all Americans for their service and the sacrifice each one of them are making.  And here at home, the First Lady and my wife Jill have made supporting military families a priority.  These families are also making difficult sacrifices for our country, and they deserve our admiration and gratitude as well.

Our service members and their families are always on our mind, even as the President and I are working on other issues that all American families are deeply concerned about: accelerating our recovery, growing our economy, strengthening our middle class, and getting our friends and neighbors back to work.

The Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois. Kirk talked about the message that was sent by voters last November: “spend less, borrow less and tax less to put America back to work.”

“Hello, I’m Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois. Last month, the American people sent a clear message to Washington: Spend less, borrow less and tax less to put America back to work.

Unfortunately, too many in Washington want to continue the reckless tax-and-spend policies of the past. They ignore the warning signs of more debt, taxes and inflation. They embrace wasteful government spending and pork-barrel earmarks. And they think a new massive tax hike on the U.S. economy is exactly what the American people need.The current leaders of Congress should not move forward with plans that were just rejected by the American people. These leaders should not raise taxes and risk another recession. Instead, Congress should reduce spending and prevent another tax hike on American taxpayers.

Americans already pay some of the highest taxes in the world. By raising taxes in order to fuel higher spending, we threaten to restart the recession, pushing millions of Americans out of work.

And in a larger sense, that’s emblematic of what Americans have always done.  We come together and do what’s required to make tomorrow better than today.  That’s who we are.
