Sand GrainsThe following podcast is brought to you courtesy of A World of Possibilities and The Mainstream Media Project.

Our failure to protect and respect innately sacred natural places is a direct reflection of our loss of connection to the land and water that sustain us – and a harbinger of self-destruction. These sacred places are sometimes known only to their ancestral guardians and the peoples that have long revered them. Others are those special places in our own neighborhoods where we go for solace, reflection and refreshment. Today we’ll travel to remote regions of the planet where indigenous peoples safeguard the wellsprings of their – and our – well-being.

President Obama Weekly Address: The Wall Street Reform Bill Will Build the Economy

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama praised the Wall Street reform bill that he signed into law on Wednesday and explained how it fits into the greater strategy to bring the country out of recession and build an economy for the long run.  The president’s plan is aimed at strengthening the middle class and gives tax breaks to small businesses that creates jobs here, invests in homegrown, clean energy, and cuts taxes for working families.

“This week, I signed into law a Wall Street reform bill that will protect consumers and our entire economy from the recklessness and irresponsibility that led to the worst recession of our lifetime.  It’s reform that will help put a stop to the abusive practices of mortgage lenders and credit card companies.  It will end taxpayer bailouts of Wall Street firms.  And it will finally bring the shadowy deals that caused the financial crisis into the light of day.

Wall Street reform is a key pillar of an overall economic plan we’ve put in place to dig ourselves out of this recession and build an economy for the long run – an economy that makes America more competitive and our middle-class more secure.  It’s a plan based on the Main Street values of hard work and responsibility – and one that demands new accountability from Wall Street to Washington. Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark Levine hosts the Raucous Caucus with Terry Kester and Garland Nixon from Washington DC.

Their main topics are the economy and whether Republicans will take of the House in November.  They debate whether the Republicans can win 39 seats in November when the Democrats only won 30 seats in 2006.

They talk about how to get out of a recession/depression.  History shows that massive government spending has been successful in doing so.  The way out is for everyone to spend more, not less.  Levine makes the point that when the economy is strong the government should cut spending and pay down debts, but when the economy is weak and people are hungry the government should feed them with increased spending.  When we get back to full employment then we should cut spending.  Spend, baby, spend is his motto for the current situation.

They agree that reform of the filibuster in the Senate is necessary.  The current government is dysfunctional, partly because of the filibuster feature.  Reforming it will bring us back to a rule by the majority.

The group talks to some live guests who have questions for them.

Financial Regulations, Goldman Sachs Deal, Mid Term Elections

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Left Right and CenterLeft, Right and Center is a weekly half-hour radio broadcast and podcast produced by KCRW in Santa Monica.

The panel begins by talking about the recent financial regulatory reform in Congress.  Huffington fears that the bill does not end the “too big to fail” concept, which could lead to more bailouts in the future.  Scheer and Blankley are also disappointed in the bill, fearing that lobbyists will now get to make the rules.  They agree that there are some real provisions that should be good in the long run.  Huffington observes that Wall Street, progressives, and conservatives all seem to be unhappy due to ineffectiveness of the regulations.

Next, the panel talks about the rebuff given to Goldman Sachs.  They agree that it is somewhere between a farce and a slap on the wrist.

They also talk about the long anticipated capping of the BP oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.  They discuss regulations, risks, and continued impact.

Lastly, the panel talks about the upcoming mid-term elections.  President Obama’s approval ratings keep sinking.  The panel discusses some reason why his ratings have fallen.

The participants on the show are Robert Scheer who represents the left, Tony Blankley who represents the right, Matt Miller, the moderator, who represents the center, and Arianna Huffington, who represents the progressive blogosphere.

At the end of this entertaining show the participants each have a 30 second rant to summarize the issue that each sees as most significant.

President Obama Weekly Address: Republican Opposition to Extending Unemployment Insurance

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama criticized the Republican leadership in the Senate for opposing initiatives which that would create jobs and strengthen the economy like cutting taxes for small businesses and extending unemployment insurance for Americans who have lost their jobs during the recession.

“This week, many of our largest corporations reported robust earnings – a positive sign of growth.

But too many of our small business owners and those who aspire to start their own small businesses continue to struggle, in part because they can’t get the credit they need to start up, grow, and hire.  And too many Americans whose livelihoods have fallen prey to the worst recession in our lifetimes – a recession that cost our economy eight million jobs – still wonder how they’ll make ends meet.

That’s why we need to take new, commonsense steps to help small businesses, grow our economy, and create jobs – and we need to take them now.

For months, that’s what we’ve been trying to do.  But too often, the Republican leadership in the United States Senate chooses to filibuster our recovery and obstruct our progress.  And that has very real consequences. (more…)

Republican Weekly Address: About the Medicare Appointment and Redistribution of Health Care

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas. Roberts talked about the recent appointment of Dr. Donald Berwick as Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  Roberts talks about Dr. Berwick’s stated philosophy of redistribution of health care services and about the likely cuts to Medicare that will result.

“I’m Pat Roberts – and I am very proud to represent Kansas in the U.S. Senate.

I’ve had the privilege of serving the people of my state as both a Senator and a Congressman.

And much of my work in Congress has focused on health care, and especially the needs and concerns of patients — whether in a rural hospital in my hometown of Dodge City or in a major metropolitan area like Kansas City.

And no matter where I go, patients tell me they are very worried that the new health care law – Obamacare — will cost more, hurt their quality of care, and keep them from seeing their doctor that they know and trust. (more…)

President Obama Weekly Address: Returning Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans to Receive Better Benefits

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama announced that on Monday the Department of Veterans Affairs, led by Secretary Shinseki, will begin to make it easier for veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to receive the benefits they need.

“Last weekend, on the Fourth of July, Michelle and I welcomed some of our extraordinary military men and women and their families to the White House.
They were just like the thousands of active duty personnel and veterans I’ve met across this country and around the globe.  Proud.  Strong.  Determined.  Men and women with the courage to answer their country’s call, and the character to serve the United States of America.
Because of that service; because of the honor and heroism of our troops around the world; our people are safer, our nation is more secure, and we are poised to end our combat mission in Iraq by the end of August, completing a drawdown of more than 90,000 troops since last January.
Still, we are a nation at war.  For the better part of a decade, our men and women in uniform have endured tour after tour in distant and dangerous places.  Many have risked their lives.  Many have given their lives.  And as a grateful nation, humbled by their service, we can never honor these American heroes or their families enough. Republican Weekly Address: Dangers of Our Large National Debt

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Phil Gingrey of Georgia. Gingrey invites Americans fed up with Washington’s out-of-control ‘stimulus’ spending spree to make their voices heard through America Speaking Out and help construct a new agenda rooted in the principles of a smaller, more accountable, and less costly government. talked about the Independence Day celebrations across the nation and about the dangers of our large national debt.

“Hello, I’m Doctor Phil Gingrey, and I work for the people of Georgia’s 11th Congressional District.

“Americans are fed up with how things are going in the country right now. They see more job losses, rising debt, and plummeting home sales. They feel let down by a government that passes one 2,000-page, trillion-dollar law after another instead of focusing on addressing the problems Americans worry about every day.

“Republicans are listening and offering better solutions that get Washington out of your way, out of your pocket, and back on your side.

“Just look at jobs. President Obama and Democrats in Washington are still trying to convince Americans that their trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ is working. But our economy has lost more than three million private sector jobs since February 2009. During that same time period, the federal government has actually grown by more than 400,000 jobs. More government, fewer jobs – that’s not recovery, those aren’t results, they’re just more of the same broken promises. Republicans are offering specific proposals to cut spending now. We can provide the fiscal discipline economists say is needed to create private-sector jobs and boost our economy. (more…)

President Obama Weekly Address: Jobs Creation with Solar Energy

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama nnounced that the Department of Energy is awarding nearly $2 billion in conditional commitments from the Recovery Act to two solar companies. Abengoa Solar has agreed to build one of the largest solar plants in the world in Arizona, which will create about 1,600 construction jobs with over 70 percent of the construction components and products manufactured here in the USA.  When completed, this plant will provide enough clean energy to power 70,000 homes.  And, Abound Solar Manufacturing is building two new plants, one in Colorado and one in Indiana.  These projects will create more than 2,000 construction jobs, and over 1,500 permanent jobs as the plants produce millions of state of the art solar panels each year.

This week, I spent some time in Racine, Wisconsin, talking with folks who are doing their best to cope with the aftermath of a brutal recession.

And while I was there, a young woman asked me a question I hear all the time: “What are we doing as a nation to bring jobs back to this country?”

Well, on Friday, we learned that after 22 straight months of job loss, our economy has now created jobs in the private sector for 6 months in a row.  That’s a positive sign.  But the truth is, the recession from which we’re emerging has left us in a hole that’s about 8 million jobs deep.  And as I’ve said from the day I took office, it’s going to take months, even years, to dig our way out – and it’s going to require an all-hands-on-deck effort.
