Detox! The Movement to Reform Chemicals Policy

The following podcast is brought to you courtesy of A World of Possibilities and The Mainstream Media Project.

It’s not a very comfortable thought: We live, eat, and breathe in a complex brew of industrial chemicals, some eighty thousand of them. And all but a handful have never been tested to find out it they’re safe. At the same time, all kinds of diseases and disabilities, ranging from autism to asthma, are on the rise. What, if any, connection might there be between chemical exposure and eventual disease or disability?

We really don’t know. The laws that regulate the use of chemicals in consumer products and the environment were passed thirty years ago and remain unchanged. They’re nicknamed ToSCA, short for the Toxic Substances Control Act. Passed in 1976, even at the time the legislation was viewed by many as inadequate to regulate a rapidly evolving industry.

Today on A World of Possibilities, we’ll look into that cauldron to find out more about the chemicals we’re ingesting and what we know – and don’t yet know about what they’re doing to us.

Guyana’s Magda Pollard on Equal Employment Rights for Women, Part 2

At the height of the second wave of feminism the world saw Magda Pollard emerge as the face of Guyana and the Caribbean in the struggle to end all forms of discrimination against women, for which, it can be agreed, she has left a lasting legacy.

Despite the prevailing mindsets believing that the world operates on the psyche of men, Magda Pollard believes, some progress has been achieved in influencing this mindset, though women are yet to hit the glass ceiling as they should.

In 1993, it was the recognition of her work to create a liberating and sustaining environment for women that earned her the Caribbean Community’s Triennial Award for Women, which she shares with other Guyanese greats such as Justice Desiree Bernard and the late President Janet Jagan.

At home, she received two of the country’s highest national awards – the Cacique Crown of Honour and the Arrow of Achievement.

President Obama Weekly Address: About the Republican Pledge to America

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama broke with Republicans in Congress who are putting special interests ahead of the American people and offering only a rehash of the very same economic policies that led to the financial crisis.

“This week, the economists who officially decide when recessions start and end declared the recession of 2008 to be over.  But if you’re one of the millions of Americans who lost your home, your job, or your savings as a consequence of the recession, this news is of little comfort or value.

Yes, the economy is growing instead of shrinking, as it was in 2008 and the beginning of 2009.  We’re gaining private sector jobs each month instead of losing 800,000, as we did the month I took office.

But we have to keep pushing to promote growth that will generate the jobs we need, and repair the terrible damage the recession has done.  That’s why I’ve proposed a series of additional steps: accelerated tax breaks for businesses who buy equipment now; a permanent research and development tax break to promote innovation by American companies; and a new initiative to rebuild America’s roads, rails, and runways that will put folks to work and make our country more competitive.

McCarthy discussed “A Pledge to America,” a new governing agenda built by listening to the American people and focused on addressing their top priorities – including creating jobs, cutting spending, and changing the way Congress works. Rep. McCarthy talks about how this agenda could be implemented today if President Obama and Democratic Leaders would allow it.

Toxic Legacy: Healing from Agent Orange

Thirty-five years ago the war in Vietnam came to an abrupt end, yet for millions of Vietnamese soldiers and citizens and for thousands of American veterans and their descendants, a legacy of diseases, disabilities, and unexplained symptoms echo down the decades. During the war, some 4.5 million Vietnamese were exposed to highly toxic dioxins sprayed by the American military.  Today we’ll hear from a range of individuals from varied sectors and backgrounds who’ve gathered together in support of a ten-year plan of action to clean up toxic hotspots in Vietnam and expand humanitarian services to people with disabilities as a result of exposure to Agent Orange dioxins.

President Obama Weekly Address: The Citizens United Supreme Court Decision

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama called out the Republican leadership in Congress for defending the entrenched special interests and the status quo.  After the Supreme Court overturned decades of law and precedent in the Citizens United decision, the administration tried to fix the new loopholes in the campaign finance system with a common sense law.

Back in January, in my State of the Union Address, I warned of the danger posed by a Supreme Court ruling called Citizens United. This decision overturned decades of law and precedent.  It gave the special interests the power to spend without limit – and without public disclosure – to run ads in order to influence elections.
Now, as an election approaches, it’s not just a theory.  We can see for ourselves how destructive to our democracy this can become.  We see it in the flood of deceptive attack ads sponsored by special interests using front groups with misleading names.  We don’t know who’s behind these ads or who’s paying for them.  Even foreign-controlled corporations seeking to influence our democracy are able to spend freely in order to swing an election toward a candidate they prefer. Republican Weekly Address: The Expiration of the Tax Cuts

Walden called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to allow an up-or-down vote before Congress adjourns for the fall on legislation to stop all of the job-killing tax hikes that are scheduled to take effect on January 1.

“Hello, I’m Representative Greg Walden, and I work for the people of Oregon’s Second Congressional District.

“Before being sent to Congress, like many Americans, I worked for myself. My wife and I were small business owners for nearly 22 years. So we know what it’s like to sign the front of a payroll check, and scratch out a business plan on the back of a napkin.“You know it’s this entrepreneurial spirit, unfortunately, that is lost on the powers-that-be in Washington, who think that the change comes in the form of 2,000-page monstrosities that transfer money and freedom from the people to the government. We the People: Constitution Day

Bill of Rights of the US ConstitutionOn September 17, 1787, our U.S. Constitution was signed in Philadelphia at Independence Hall.  The document was signed by 39 founding fathers with the exception of Thomas Jefferson who was in France and John Adams who was in England at the time.  Benjamin Franklin, 81, was the oldest representative, and Jonathon Dayton, 26, the youngest.  The Constitution was ratified by the states in 1788.

In 1791 the founders added a declaration of rights to the Constitution.  These 10 amendments became known as The Bill of Rights.  More than 11,000 amendments have been introduced in Congress over the years, but only 27 have been ratified by the necessary number of states.

You probably memorized the Preamble to the Constitution in school.  Here it is to refresh your memory:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

China, India, Southeast Asia: Asia’s high-octane economies, though impacted by the global recession, are on a long-term trajectory to expand their influence. Their energy and determination are challenging the economic supremacy of the United States not only in the region but wherever key natural resources are in play. China alone holds the commanding share of U.S. debt in a complex relationship that yokes the two economic titans together in a tense, unpredictable partnership. President Obama says the U.S.-Chinese dynamic is “as important as any bilateral relationship in the world.” Is it a zero sum game where either they or “we” prevail or can it be reframed as a quest for shared prosperity? Protectionism and xenophobia threaten to derail the relationship to the detriment of both. How can American foreign and economic policies avoid such mutually destructive outcomes and instead encourage a healthier mix of competition and cooperation?

Left Right and CenterLeft, Right and Center is a weekly half-hour radio broadcast and podcast produced by KCRW in Santa Monica.

The panel talked about the important press conference recently held by President Obama.  While Bob and Tony were not impressed, Arianna was glad to hear that Elizabeth Warren would be added to the Consumer Protection Agency.

The panel talked about the effect that the Press conference might have on the banking industry.  They then talk about the excessive coverage given to the Florida pastor who has threatened to burn a Koran on the anniversary of the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks.

The participants on the show are Robert Scheer who represents the left, Tony Blankley who represents the right, Matt Miller, the moderator, who represents the center, and Arianna Huffington, who represents the progressive blogosphere.

At the end of this entertaining show the participants each have a 30 second rant to summarize the issue that each sees as most significant.

President Obama Weekly Address: National Day of Service and Remembrance

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama marked the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks as a National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor those who lost their lives.  If there is a lesson to be drawn on this anniversary, it is that the United States is one nation and one people united by common ideals.

“Today, we pause to remember a day that tested our country.  On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the deadliest attack on American soil in our history.  We will never forget the images of planes vanishing into buildings; of photos hung by the families of the missing.  We will never forget the anger and sadness we felt.  And while nine years have come and gone since that September morning, the passage of time will never diminish the pain and loss forever seared in the consciousness of our nation.

That is why, on this day, we pray with the families of those who died.  We mourn with husbands and wives, children and parents, friends and loved ones.  We think about the milestones that have passed over the course of nine years – births and christenings, weddings and graduations – all with an empty chair.  (more…)

Republican Weekly Address: Remembering Terrorist Attacks of 2001

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator John Kyl of Arizona. Kyl talked about the terrorist attacks on the US in 2001 and the actions that were taken to make the nation safer.

“On this date nine years ago, Islamist terrorists hijacked four commercial jets and killed almost 3,000 innocent people. Americans finally realized that the sporadic attacks that had occurred earlier were not isolated events – they were all part of a war that had been declared by leaders of militant Islamist groups and had to be confronted as such.

In the unity that immediately followed September 11, a number of actions were taken. Congress and the nation resolved that Afghanistan could no longer serve as a sanctuary for Al Qaeda. So Congress authorized the use of force and also passed the Patriot Act allowing our intelligence and law enforcement communities to work together. The president directed our intelligence agencies to better use modern technology to gather information. (more…)
