Republican Weekly Address: Solutions for Ending Economic Uncertainty

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative John Boehner of Ohio. Boehner outlined solutions for ending economic uncertainty, stopping government’s spending binge, and changing the way Congress does business. In the address, Boehner noted that this is a new approach that hasn’t been tried in Washington – by either party – and it is at the core of the Pledge to America, a governing agenda Republicans built by listening to the people.

“Hello. I’m John Boehner.

“Before I served in Congress, I ran a small business here in Ohio, and I saw first-hand how politicians in Washington can make it harder for small employers to meet a payroll and create jobs.

“In the final days of the 2008 campaign, Barack Obama promised to ‘change this country and change the world.’

“Well I don’t know about the world, but here at home, Americans haven’t experienced the change President Obama promised. One in ten of our fellow citizens is out of work. Our national debt has grown by $3 trillion Trust in government has fallen to an all-time low.

President Obama Weekly Address: After the Elections Congress Needs to Work Together

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama called the recent comments by the GOP leadership, which put scoring political points over solving the problems facing the country, “troubling,” and asked Democrats and Republicans to work together to move the country forward.

“Tuesday is Election Day, and here in Washington, the talk is all about who will win and who will lose – about parties and politics.

But around kitchen tables, I’m pretty sure you’re talking about other things: about your family finances, or maybe the state of the economy in your hometown; about your kids, and what their futures will bring.  And your hope is that once this election is over, the folks you choose to represent you will put the politics aside for a while, and work together to solve problems.

That’s my hope, too.

Whatever the outcome on Tuesday, we need to come together to help put people who are still looking for jobs back to work.  And there are some practical steps we can take right away to promote growth and encourage businesses to hire and expand.  These are steps we all should be able to agree on – not Democratic or Republican ideas, but proposals that have traditionally been supported by both parties.

President Obama Weekly Address: Importance of Wall Street Financial Reform

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama called out the Republican leadership in Congress for vowing to repeal Wall Street reform, which will protect Americans from unfair practices in mortgage transactions and foreclosures.

Over the past two years, we’ve won a number of battles to defend the interests of the middle class.  One of the most important victories we achieved was the passage of Wall Street Reform.

This was a bill designed to rein in the secret deals and reckless gambling that nearly brought down the financial system.  It set new rules so that taxpayers would never again be on the hook for a bailout if a big financial company went under.  And reform included the strongest consumer protections in history – to put an end to a lot of the hidden fees, deceptive mortgages, and other abusive practices used to tilt the tables against ordinary people in their financial dealings.

Republican Weekly Address: A New Direction in Congress

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator John Thune of South Dakota.  He talked about unemployment and the need for a new direction in Congress.

Hello, I’m Senator John Thune of South Dakota. As you’ve probably noticed, we have an election coming up in a little over a week.

President Obama has been running around the country trying to reelect Democrat members of Congress.

But if the conversations I’ve had with voters are any indication, the president should spend less time campaigning to save the jobs of Democrats in Congress, and more time trying to create jobs for the American people. All across South Dakota and the country, I’ve heard from people who aren’t fooled by President Obama’s well-written speeches. They have serious concerns about our economy, and they are all too familiar with the Administration’s failed policies.

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark Levine hosts the Raucous Caucus with Terry Kester and Garland Nixon from Washington DC.

Here’s how Levine provocatively describes today’s discussion:

“Money is the Root of All Evil
Money is the Mother’s Milk of Politics
Does anyone see anything wrong here?
The Raucous Caucus looks at who’s financing the midterm elections.

We discuss how foreign countries (Russia, China, etc.) and multinational corporations (oil, pharmaceutical, etc.) with the help of five lawless Members of the United States Supreme Court (Scalia, Roberts, etc.) have taken over the Republican Party and made sure it follows their dictates, rather than We the People.

Will we ever see democracy again?”

Guyana’s Magda Pollard on Equal Employment Rights for Women, Part 3

Saturday, October 16th, 2010
Listen Now

At the height of the second wave of feminism the world saw Magda Pollard emerge as the face of Guyana and the Caribbean in the struggle to end all forms of discrimination against women, for which, it can be agreed, she has left a lasting legacy.

Despite the prevailing mindsets believing that the world operates on the psyche of men, Magda Pollard believes, some progress has been achieved in influencing this mindset, though women are yet to hit the glass ceiling as they should.

In 1993, it was the recognition of her work to create a liberating and sustaining environment for women that earned her the Caribbean Community’s Triennial Award for Women, which she shares with other Guyanese greats such as Justice Desiree Bernard and the late President Janet Jagan.

At home, she received two of the country’s highest national awards – the Cacique Crown of Honour and the Arrow of Achievement.
It was in 1980, one year after the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the UN General Assembly, that Ms Pollard was appointed the first Women’s Affairs Officer at the CARICOM Secretariat and worked to get Caribbean government to agree to sign on to and ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). It was Ms Pollard’s task to get governments in the region to put in place such national action plans.

President Obama Weekly Address: Create Jobs with Tax Incentives to Businesses

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Barack Obama laid out a policy agenda that would strengthen our economy and create jobs right here in America by offering tax incentives to businesses that hire new employees, making the research and experimentation tax credit permanent and providing a tax cut for clean energy manufacturing.

After a decade of hardship for middle class families, and a recession that wiped away millions of jobs, we are in the middle of a tough fight to rebuild this economy and put folks back to work.

Winning this fight will not depend on government alone.  It will depend on the innovation of American entrepreneurs; on the drive of American small business owners; on the skills and talents of American workers.  These are the people who will help us grow our economy and create jobs.

But government still has an important responsibility.  And that’s to create an environment in which someone can raise capital to start a new company; where a business can get a loan to expand; where ingenuity is prized and folks are rewarded for their hard work.
