President Obama Weekly Address: From Wisconsin: Out-Innovate, Out-Educate, Out-Build

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama called Orion Energy Systems in Manitowoc, Wisconsin an example of how America can win the future by being the best place on Earth to do business.  Orion was able to open with the help of small business loans and incentives that are creating demand for clean energy technologies.  By sparking innovation and spurring new products and technologies, America will unleash the talent and ingenuity of American workers and businesses, which will lead to new, good jobs.

“I’m speaking to you today from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where I’m at an innovative company called Orion Energy Systems.

Just a few years ago, this was an empty warehouse.  A major employer had shut down this factory, moved its operations abroad, and took a lot of jobs away from this town.

But today, as you can see behind me, this is a thriving enterprise once more. You are looking at a factory where 250 workers are building advanced clean energy systems – state-of-the-art technologies that use solar power and energy efficiency to save farms and businesses thousands of dollars on their utility bills.

I’m here because this business and others like it are showing us the way forward. And in the coming days, I’ll be shining a spotlight on innovators across America who are relying on new technologies to create new jobs and opportunities in new industries.

Republican Weekly Address: Work With the President to Reduce Spending and Create Jobs

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. He talked about the need for spending reductions and his belief that big government inhibits job creation.

“Hello, my name is Ron Johnson. I’m the newly elected senator from the great state of Wisconsin.

“For those of you who don’t know me, this is the first elective office I have ever sought or held. The reason I ran is simple and straightforward. We are bankrupting America, and I thought it was time for citizen legislators to come to Washington to help those individuals already here that are seriously facing that reality.”For the last 31 years, I have been running a plastics manufacturing plant in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. As a manufacturer, I have learned to identify and attack the root cause of a problem, not spend my time addressing mere symptoms. Huge deficits, slow economic activity, high unemployment and woefully inadequate job creation are severe symptoms of the problem. They are not the root cause. The ever expanding size, scope and cost of government is. This is what we must address. This is what I hope the President has come to realize.

I hope the president and his allies in Congress accept a simple truth: Big government is blocking job creation, not helping it. The sooner Washington ends its dependence on more spending, the sooner our economy will see real growth.

I bring the perspective of someone who’s been creating jobs, meeting a payroll, balancing a budget and living under the rules, regulations and taxes that politicians here in Washington impose on the rest of us. I know firsthand the incentives and disincentives, the intended and unintended consequences of government intrusion into our lives.

Republican Response to the State of the Union Address

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Republican ElephantThe Republican response to the President’s State of the Union Address was given by Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Good evening. I’m Congressman Paul Ryan from Janesville, Wisconsin – and Chairman here at the House Budget Committee.

President Obama just addressed a Congressional chamber filled with many new faces. One face we did not see tonight was that of our friend and colleague, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. We all miss Gabby and her cheerful spirit; and we are praying for her return to the House Chamber.

Earlier this month, President Obama spoke movingly at a memorial event for the six people who died on that violent morning in Tucson. Still, there are no words that can lift the sorrow that now engulfs the families and friends of the fallen.

What we can do is assure them that the nation is praying for them; that, in the words of the Psalmist, the Lord heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds; and that over time grace will replace grief.

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark Levine hosts the Raucous Caucus with Terry Kester and Garland Nixon from Washington DC.

The raucous caucus talk about domestic surveillance of American citizens.

Their guest is Mike German, a former FBI special agent.  He is currently a senior policy analyst with the ACLU.

The group starts with the premise that government surveillance can sometimes stop violence.  German relates some of the history of the FBI regarding their surveillance of American citizens.

The group talks for a while about surveillance activities during the Bush Administration.  Surveillance powers expanded following the attacks of Sept 11, 2001.  They talk about the fact that the rules that were changed then are still in place.

After talking about a few stories told by Mike German, the reaction is that the FBI must be spying on everyone.  German says that it wasn’t so bad before 9/11, 2001.

The group takes some questions from the live audience.

President Obama Weekly Address: The Truth About the Economy

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama used his weekly address to highlight the steps his administration is taking to make America more competitive.  As a result of the deals made with China this week, U.S. exports to China will increase by more than $45 billion and China will increase its investments in America by several billion dollars.  These deals will support some 235,000 American jobs.  Also, the President named GE CEO Jeff Immelt to head up the new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, which will help find ways to grow the economy by investing in American businesses.

“Here’s the truth about today’s economy: If we’re serious about fighting for American jobs and American businesses, one of the most important things we can do is open up more markets to American goods around the world.

That’s why I met with China’s President Hu Jintao at the White House this past week. We’re now exporting more than $100 billion a year to China in goods and services. And as a result of deals we completed this week, we’ll be increasing U.S. exports to China by more than $45 billion, and China’s investments in America by several billion dollars.  Most important, these deals will support some 235,000 American jobs. And that includes a lot of manufacturing jobs.

That goal is why I fought so hard to negotiate a new and better trade deal with South Korea – a deal with unprecedented support from business and labor – that will support more than 70,000 American jobs. And that’s why I traveled to India last fall to help pave the way for $10 billion in new deals for American businesses and more than 50,000 new American jobs.

President Obama Weekly Address: Call for Republicans and Democrats to Work Together

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

On his weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama said that once business resumes in Washington, he looks forward to working with members of both parties to meet the challenges facing the country.  By working together in a spirit of common cause, the President and members of Congress can face these challenges in a way worthy of the voters who sent them to Washington.

“It’s been one week since tragedy visited Tucson, Arizona.

We properly spent much of the week mourning the victims and remembering their lives. We also discovered stories that serve to lift us up – stories of heroism and bravery, of courage and community – stories that remind us that we are one American family, 300 million strong.

One of the places we saw that sense of community on display was on the floor of Congress, where Gabby Giffords, who inspires us with her recovery, is deeply missed by her colleagues.  One by one, Representatives from all parts of the country and all points of view rose in common cause to honor Gabby and the other victims, and to reflect on our shared hopes for this country.

Republican Weekly Address: On the Attacks in Tucson

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Republican ElephantDelivering the Weekly Republican Address, Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) honors the victims and pays tribute the heroes of the horrific events that unfolded in Tucson, Arizona last week.

“Hello, I’m Jeff Flake, and I represent the people of Arizona’s sixth Congressional District.

“Last week’s horrific attack in Tucson is a stark reminder of the senseless brutality of which some are capable; the selfless bravery with which true heroes respond; and the enduring need for leaders who will uphold their oaths and listen to their constituents.
“My heart goes out to the family of my friend and colleague, Representative Gabrielle Giffords, and to all those impacted by this heinous act.

“Among the lost are a federal judge … a young girl, born on September 11th … a Congressional staffer …

“Many others were injured. And the lives of many are forever changed.

“These violent acts have no place in our society. And we should honor those who stood up in defiance, for it was from the shadows of this evil that we saw true heroism emerge.

“When shots began to fire, Daniel Hernandez – a young man who joined Gabby’s staff as an intern just days before the incident – rushed into harm’s way. As he checked the pulses of the wounded he noticed Gabby on the ground, injured. He ran to her aid, and amid the crisis, shielded and tended to her.
