Designing With Nature: Biomimicry

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

The following podcast is brought to you courtesy of A World of Possibilities and The Mainstream Media Project.

Fasten your seatbelts. Now put on your thinking caps; you’ll need ‘em. And while you’re at it, tie on those wings of unfettered imagination. We’re about to enter a different kind of twilight zone. This is not your biochem class nor a biotech lab. This is biomimcry, an emerging art and science of a very different kind that uses the evolutionary genius of nature to inspire new approaches to some of our most vexing problems.

Today on A World of Possibilities, “Designing with Nature.” We’ll explore how green design is being applied to environmental challenges ranging from toxic carpets to contaminated wastewater. What are the possibilities and constraints in applying these principles more broadly to help clean up both what we use and how it’s made?

President Obama Weekly Address: Education Standards, No Child Left Behind

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama told the American people that it is time to raise the standards of our education system so that every classroom is a place of high expectations and high performance.  On Friday, the President announced that states will have greater flexibility to find innovative ways of improving the quality of learning and teaching, so that we can strengthen performance in our classrooms and ensure that teachers are helping students learn rather than teaching to the test.

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve been making the case that we need to act now on the American Jobs Act, so we can put folks back to work and start building an economy that lasts into the future.

Education is an essential part of this economic agenda.  It is an undeniable fact that countries who out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow.  Businesses will hire wherever the highly-skilled, highly-trained workers are located.

But today, our students are sliding against their peers around the globe.  Today, our kids trail too many other countries in math, science, and reading.  As many as a quarter of our students aren’t even finishing high school.  And we’ve fallen to 16th in the proportion of our young people with a college degree, even though we know that sixty percent of new jobs in the coming decade will require more than a high school diploma.

Republican Weekly Address: Government Regulations and Job Creation

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator Susan Collins of Maine. Senator Collins discussed the burdens excessive regulations place on businesses and how they hurt job creation.

“I’m Senator Susan Collins from the Great State of Maine.

Last month, our nation produced no net new jobs. More than 14 million Americans could not find work.

I’ve asked employers what would it take to help them add more jobs. No matter the size of their business or the size of their workforce, they tell me that Washington must stop imposing crushing new regulations.

Some regulations are just plain silly. Last year, the federal government issued a warning to a company that sells packaged walnuts. Washington claimed that the walnuts were being marketed as a drug, so the government ordered the company to stop telling consumers about the health benefits of nuts.

President Obama Weekly Address: Fund the Transportation Bill

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama called on Congress to do what it has done seven times over the past two years and pass a clean extension of the transportation bill.  Failure of Congress to act would be disastrous for the economy, costing nearly one million workers their jobs over the next year and almost $1 billion in highway funding after the first ten days alone.

“At the end of September, if Congress doesn’t act, funding for our roads and bridges will expire.  This would put a stop to highway construction, bridge repair, mass transit systems and other important projects that keep our country moving quickly and safely.  And it would affect thousands of construction workers and their families who depend on the jobs created by these projects to make ends meet.

Usually, renewing this transportation bill is a no-brainer.  In fact, Congress has renewed it seven times over the last two years.  But thanks to political posturing in Washington, they haven’t been able to extend it this time – and the clock is running out.

Allowing this bill to expire would be a disaster for our infrastructure and our economy.  Right away, over 4,000 workers would be furloughed without pay.  If it’s delayed for just 10 days, we will lose nearly $1 billion in highway funding that we can never get back.  And if we wait even longer, almost 1 million workers could be in danger of losing their jobs over the next year.

Republican Weekly Address: Balanced Budget Advantages

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Bob Goodlatte of Virgina. Congressman Goodlatte maked the case for how a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution would provide greater certainty about our nation’s fiscal trajectory over the long haul, helping private-sector small-business people plan, invest and get back to creating jobs.

“Hello, I’m Congressman Bob Goodlatte from the Commonwealth of Virginia. It’s a pleasure to speak with you on Labor Day weekend as we honor the ingenuity and perseverance of America’s workers.

“Of course, ours are the best workers in the world, and given a level playing field, they can compete and win against anyone.

“Except we don’t have a level playing field. Our employers face some of the highest tax rates in the world. Endless red tape makes it harder to plan and invest. Our national debt – much of which is owed to China – is on track to exceed the size of our entire economy.
