President Obama Weekly Address: Reducing Our Dependence on Foreign Oil

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama called on all Americans to place their bets on America’s future as we reduce our dependence on foreign oil by expanding domestic oil and gas production, increasing the efficiency of the vehicles we drive, and investing in advanced technologies and alternative fuels.

“Hi, everybody.  As I’m sure you’ve noticed over the past few weeks, the price at your local pump has been going up and up.  And because it’s an election year, so has the temperature of our political rhetoric.

What matters most to me right now is the impact that rising prices have on you.  When you’ve got to spend more on gas, you’ve got less to spend on everything else.  It makes things harder.  So I wanted to take a minute this weekend to explain what steps my Administration is taking when it comes to energy – most importantly, producing more of it while using less of it.

The truth is: the price of gas depends on a lot of factors that are often beyond our control.  Unrest in the Middle East can tighten global oil supply.  Growing nations like China or India adding cars to the road increases demand.  But one thing we should control is fraud and manipulation that can cause prices to spike even further. Republican Weekly Address: How to Ease Rising Gasoline Prices

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Cory Gardner of Colorado. Congressman Gardner said that Americans are fed up with President Obama’s failure to tackle rising gas prices, but there’s still time for him to do the right thing and urge the Democratic-run Senate to act on bipartisan, House-passed energy bills.

“Driving around the district these days, the first, and often times only, thing my constituents want to talk about is the pain at the pump. In our state, gas prices have gone up 40 cents a gallon in just one month. This hurts everyone … families, commuters, job seekers, and especially small business owners. It isn’t just American dollars at risk with high gas prices – it’s American jobs, too.

“People in my district and around the country are fed up with the way the president is handling this issue, and rightfully so. The most forceful thing the president has done about high gas prices is try to explain that he’s against them. Americans are right to expect more from their leaders.

“To be fair, there have been signs of hope. Last month, the president told leaders in Congress he would be willing to work with Republicans on an ‘all-of-the-above’ energy strategy.
That was encouraging. Republicans have long supported an ‘all-of-the-above’ strategy to develop our own resources – both traditional and renewable – so we can lower costs and improve America’s energy security. (more…)

President Obama Weekly Address: The Comeback of the American Auto Industry

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama told the American people that three years after helping the auto industry save more than one million jobs, the American auto industry is back and creating cars that are even better than before.  The entire industry has added more than 200,000 jobs in the past two and a half years, and thanks to the Administration’s new fuel efficiency standards, these companies are making cars that will save families money at the pump and help reduce our reliance on foreign oil.

“Hi, everybody.  Earlier this week, I spent some time with the hardworking men and women of the American auto industry, who are busy writing a new chapter in America’s story.

Just a few years ago, their industry was shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs.  Two of the Big Three – GM and Chrysler – were on the brink of failure.  If we had let this great American industry collapse – if we had let Detroit go bankrupt – more than one million Americans would have lost their jobs in the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression.

I refused to let that happen.  These jobs are worth more than just a paycheck – they’re a source of pride and a ticket to the middle class.  These companies are worth more than just the cars they build – they’re a symbol of American innovation and a source of our manufacturing might. (more…)
