Republican Weekly Address: Jobs Bills and Memorial Day

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Lynn Jenkins of Kansas. Representative Jenkins honored America’s fallen heroes and talked about how best to ensure our servicemembers come home to a strong, growing economy. With Americans continuing to ask ‘where are the jobs?,’ Rep. Jenkins touted Republicans’ Plan for America’s Job Creators and the nearly 30 House-passed jobs bills that are stalled in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

“Hi, I’m Lynn Jenkins, I represent the Second Congressional District of Kansas, home to Fort Leavenworth, the oldest active Army post west of our nation’s capital, Fort Riley, home of the Big Red One, the 190th Coyotes at Forbes Field; and nearly 12,000 National Guard and Reserve members.

“It’s an honor to speak with you on Memorial Day weekend, a time to pause and thank the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who have died in the defense of our country. As we honor the fallen, we pray for our sons and daughters who are risking their lives so that we may live in freedom and security.

Campaign News, Bain Capital, Europe and China Economy

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Left Right and CenterLeft, Right and Center is a weekly half-hour radio broadcast and podcast produced by KCRW in Santa Monica.

On this show the panelists first talk about campaign news.  President Obama campaigned directly against Mitt Romney, attacking him on his record with Bain Capital.  There’s a question whether Bain created jobs as Romney declares or whether Bain destroyed jobs.  Also, the attack on private equity by the President raises questions about the wisdom of the attack. Cory Booker gave a strong statement in favor of private equity firms such as Bain.  The panel debates these issues in a lively discussion.

The group talks about a couple of other campaign issues, such as women and education, before discussing the anxieties over Europe’s economic woes.  Will Greece’s problems be contagious?  They also talk about China’s economic problems and whether they will impact the US.

The participants on the show are Robert Scheer who represents the left, Matthew Continetti who represents the right, and Matt Miller, the moderator, who represents the center.

At the end of this entertaining show the participants each have a 30 second rant to summarize the issue that each sees as most significant.

President Obama Weekly Address: Memorial Day Tribute

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama paid tribute to our men and women in uniform who have died in service to our country.  The President also reaffirmed our nation’s dedication to serving our veterans as well as they have served us, and thanked our men and women in uniform for their unwavering commitment to the United States.

“This weekend, folks across the country are opening up the pool, firing up the grill, and taking a well-earned moment to relax. But Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. In town squares and national cemeteries, in public services and moments of quiet reflection, we will honor those who loved their country enough to sacrifice their own lives for it.

This Memorial Day, Michelle and I will join Gold Star families, veterans, and their families at Arlington National Cemetery. We’ll pay tribute to patriots of every generation who gave the last full measure of devotion, from Lexington and Concord to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Later that day, we’ll join Vietnam veterans and their families at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial—the Wall. We’ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. It’s another chance to honor those we lost at places like Hue, Khe Sanh, Danang and Hamburger Hill. And we’ll be calling on you—the American people—to join us in thanking our Vietnam veterans in your communities.

President Obama Weekly Address: Wall Street Reforms

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama discussed Wall Street reform that he put in place to protect consumers, make Wall Street play by the same set of rules, and ensure that taxpayers are never again on the hook for the type of irresponsible behavior on Wall Street that nearly destroyed our financial system and cost the economy millions of jobs.

“For the past three and a half years, we’ve been fighting our way back from an historic economic crisis – one caused by breathtaking irresponsibility on the part of some on Wall Street who treated our financial system like a casino.  Not only did that behavior nearly destroy the financial system – it cost our economy millions of jobs, hurt middle-class families, and left taxpayers holding the bag.

Since then, we’ve recovered taxpayer dollars that were used to stabilize troubled banks.  And we’ve put in place Wall Street reform with smarter, tougher, commonsense rules that serve one primary purpose:  to prevent a crisis like that from ever happening again.  And yet, for the past two years, too many Republicans in Congress and an army of financial industry lobbyists have actually been waging an all-out battle to delay, defund, and dismantle Wall Street reform.

Republican Weekly Address: Need to Pass a Budget

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Senator Johnson discussed Senate Democrats’ refusal to pass a budget.

Sen. Johnson says: “It has been over 3 years since the Senate passed a budget. Think about that. Even though families and most businesses produce budgets to help control their finances, the largest financial entity in the world is operating without one. Why? Because Democrats in the Senate refuse to be held accountable. They either don’t have a plan, or they simply do not want their fingerprints on one.”

He adds: “For his part, President Obama has done nothing to encourage the Senate to pass a budget. Just this week in the Senate, the President’s budget lost by a vote of 0 – 99. Last month, it failed in the House by a vote of 0 — 414. And last year, his budget lost 0 – 97 in the Senate. This is a stunning repudiation of his leadership.”

He concludes: “We can do better than this. America should do better. It is time to return to the values and principles that made this country great. I grew up in an America that valued hard work and celebrated success. America became the economic engine of the world, not because of government, but because millions of Americans had the freedom to pursue their dreams. We can reclaim this heritage once again and build a society where hard work is rewarded and every American has the opportunity to succeed. Republicans are ready, willing, and able to lead this noble effort.”

A Commencement Address, Medal of Honor Award, and the To Do List

President Obama Weekly Address: 5 Initiatives to Create Jobs and Right the Economy

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama called on Democrats and Republicans to come together and act on his Congressional “to-do list,” which will create jobs and help restore middle class security. In this make-or-break moment for the middle class, these five initiatives have bipartisan support and will help create an economy that is built to last.

“We all know the past few years have been difficult for this country.  After the worst recession of our lifetimes, it will take longer than any of us would like for the economy to fully recover.  But there are plenty of steps we can take to speed up the recovery.  There are things we can do – right now – to help create jobs and restore some of the financial security that so many families have lost.

Now, the other side isn’t so optimistic.  They think all we can do is cut taxes – especially for the wealthiest Americans – and go back to letting banks and corporations write their own rules again.  That’s their plan.

But I think they’re wrong.  We tried their ideas for nearly a decade, and it didn’t work out so well.  We can’t go back to the same policies that got us into this mess.  We’ve got to move forward.  We need to build an economy where hard work and responsibility are rewarded – where you can find a good job, own your own home, maybe start a businesses, and give your kids the chance to do even better. Zionism and Israel in Crisis?

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Mark debates Peter Beinart, author of the Book “The Crisis of Zionism.”

Beinart argues that Zionism is in “crisis” because Israel can’t reach a deal with the West Bank Arabs to accept (or even negotiate over) the Palestinian State that Israel repeatedly offers them (which would be the third Arab State in Palestine to exist, in addition to Jordan in Eastern Palestine and Gaza, controlled by the terrorist group Hamas in the Southwest).

Beinart argues that an Arab Palestinian State containing virtually all the Arab population of the West Bank and Gaza and 95-98%+ of the empty land disputed between Jews and Arabs (in which both populations continue to illegally settle) is so insufficient that the Israeli-settled portion of the West Bank should be boycotted. Yet he does not advocate a boycott of the Arab-settled portion of the West Bank, even though he concedes that the Arabs’ terrorism and violence have not been conducive to peace.

In the interview, Beinart occasionally blames both sides but he seems to put the onus for action on Israel, even though it is the Arabs — not Israel — who refuse to even sit down and negotiate peace. Obviously Mark disagrees.

Surviving Tragedy and Gaining Strength

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Child SoldiersThe following podcast is brought to you courtesy of A World of Possibilities and The Mainstream Media Project.

Why is it that while many of us are discouraged and some devastated by life’s losses, a rare few not only survive but thrive in their wake –transcending tragedy, growing not despite but through it. We’ve all known such people — a cancer survivor, someone who’s lost loved ones, maybe someone who experienced war, incarceration or abuse and somehow came out of it finding life all the sweeter for being so fragile and fleeting. Such individuals don’t simply endure; they transform. And through this transformation, they gain a new appreciation for life. In this program, part of our LoveLife series, we meet three remarkable individuals and communities – a female minister in Zambia who lost nearly every member of her family to AIDS, then broke the taboo of silence by revealing to her congregation that she too was HIV positive; a fourteen-year-old student abducted with scores of classmates in Northern Uganda and held captive in Sudan for eight years before freeing herself when powerful people had tried and failed; and a mother in Colombia who lost nine members of her immediate family to the army, paramilitary forces, and guerrillas before dedicating her life to helping other grief-stricken mothers find purpose and meaning again. Each of these women has found a way not just to survive but to turn her misfortune into renewed strength and a gift to the larger world. In an age of widespread skepticism about human possibilities, it’s heartening to hear from those who, despite losses often far greater than our own, have found ways to embrace life and convey that inner joy to others.

Guests:
Rev. Annie Kaseketi, minister, Apostolic Church, Zambia

Charlotte Atyam, abducted by Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda in 1998 and kept in captivity for eight years in Sudan before freeing herself in 2006

Angelina Atyam, co-founder, Concerned Parents Association, dedicated to freeing child soldiers from captivity; mother of Charlotte Atyam

Maragarita Morales, Vice President, Association of Victims for Life, Colombia
