Republican Weekly Address: Repeal of the Affordable Care Act

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming. Senator Barrasso called for full repeal of Obamacare following the Supreme Court’s decision this week to uphold the President’s health law. A doctor who has practiced medicine for 25 years, Sen. Barrasso said the Court’s ruling did nothing to improve the failed health care law: “It remains unworkable, unaffordable, and very unpopular.” Sen. Barrasso said congressional Republicans are committed to repealing Obamacare and replacing it with health care reform that ensures Americans “get the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a lower cost.”

“Hi. I’m Dr. John Barrasso, United States Senator for Wyoming.

“The President and his allies in Congress are going to try to convince the public that the Supreme Court just gave the health care law a seal of approval.

“The fact is that this is the same failed policy that won’t lower the cost of health care in America.

“On Thursday, I was in the courtroom as the Supreme Court ruled that the President’s health care law is what the President claimed it was not: a new tax.

President Obama Weekly Address: Fires in Colorado

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama spoke to the American people from Colorado, where he had just finished touring areas impacted by the devastating Waldo Canyon fire, meeting with first responders as well as families affected by the fires. The President thanked the brave firefighters and countless volunteers who are providing food, water, and shelter to those in need, and made clear that his administration will continue to bring all resources available to assist efforts to combat the fires.

“Hello, everybody.  I’m here in Colorado Springs, visiting some of the devastating fires that have been taking place over the last several days.  As many of you have been watching on television, entire communities are under threat. And we had a chance to tour some of the devastation that has been taking place in some of the subdivisions here.

Firefighters are working 18 hours a day, around the clock, trying to make sure that they get this blaze under control.  We’ve got volunteers who are out here who are making sure that these firefighters have the food and the water and all the resources that they need.  And we’ve been engaging in some unprecedented coordination between federal, state, and local communities to try to bring this fire under control.

White House Discussion on the Supreme Court Decision on the Affordable Care Act

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Today, the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act ensures hard-working, middle class families will get the security they deserve and protects every American from the worst insurance company abuses. The Court has issued a clear and final ruling on this law.

For a comprehensive overview of the Affordable Care Act, visit WhiteHouse.gov/HealthReform and HealthCare.gov.

Let’s take a look at what today’s ruling means for the middle class:

A major impact of the Court’s decision is the 129 million people with pre-existing conditions and millions of middle class families who will have the security of affordable health coverage.

We should also remember that under today’s ruling, having health insurance is and will continue to be a choice. If you can’t afford insurance or you’re a small business that wants to provide affordable insurance to your employees, you’ll get tax credits that make coverage affordable. But if you can afford insurance and you choose not to purchase it, the taxpayers will no longer subsidize your care for free.

Given today’s ruling, it’s now time to focus on implementing this law in a smart and non-bureaucratic way that works for the middle class.

Republican Weekly Address: Jobs and the Health Care Law

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. Congressman Cassidy, a practicing physician himself, talked about the need to repeal the health care law and to lower the costs of healthcare in a more systematic way.

“As you know, the U.S. Supreme Court will soon rule on the constitutionality of the president’s health care law, a law which continues to hurt job creation and damage our economy. Not only is President Obama’s health care law not working – it makes things worse by driving up health care costs, making it harder for small businesses to hire workers. The only way to change this is by repealing ObamaCare entirely.

“So, unless the Court throws out the entire law, we should repeal what is left and implement common-sense, step-by-step reforms that protect Americans’ access to the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at the lowest cost.

“In this tough economy, the top health care concern of families and small businesses is out-of-control costs. Health care coverage has become too expensive for too many people. Two years ago, Washington Democrats pushed through ObamaCare and its 2,700 pages with promises that it would fix all this. It did not have popular support. It did not have bipartisan support. But its authors insisted that ObamaCare would make health care more affordable, and of course Americans hoped that would be true.

President Obama Weekly Address: Congress Needs to Act on Transportation Bill and Student Loans

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama spoke about the urgent need for Congress to act now on two common sense measures to help hardworking middle class families.  Unless Congress takes action in the next week, thousands of workers will be sent home from their jobs and millions of students will see their interest rates double.

“Over the past three years, we’ve been clawing our way back from the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes.  And we know it will take longer than any of us would like to fully recover all the jobs and savings that have been lost.  But there are things we can do – right now – to help put people back to work and make life a little easier for middle-class families.

For months, I’ve been pushing Congress to help us along by passing common-sense policies that would make a difference.  Democrats and Republicans have already done some important work together – like passing a tax cut that’s allowing working Americans to keep more of their paycheck every week.   But Congress has refused to act on most of the other ideas in my jobs plan that economists say could put a million more Americans back to work.

There’s no excuse for inaction.  Right now, we are seven days away from thousands of American workers having to walk off the job because Congress hasn’t passed a transportation bill.  We are eight days away from nearly seven and a half million students seeing their loan rates double because Congress hasn’t acted to stop it.

Republican Weekly Address: Wisconsin’s Fiscal Success

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin. Governor Walker called for getting America’s “fiscal house on track and…our economy back in order” saying that “more big government is not the answer as the President contends. Instead, we need to confront the powerful special interests in Washington and put the hard working taxpayers back in charge of our government.”

“Hi. I’m Scott Walker from Wisconsin.

“Last fall, my wife Tonette and I had a chance to visit Independence Hall. It was quite an experience. You see, as a kid, I loved history and thought of our Founders as being well, bigger than life…almost like super heroes…so looking at the desks and the chairs where they sat was really pretty amazing.

“Standing there it dawned on me that those who had assembled in these chambers were ordinary citizens who did something quite extraordinary. They didn’t just risk their political careers or their business ventures; they risked their lives for the freedoms we hold dear today.

“It reminded me that what has made America great, what has made us exceptional for more than two centuries, what has made the United States arguably the greatest country in the history of the world; is that in moments of crisis—be they economic or fiscal, be they military or spiritual—there have been men and women of courage who thought more about the future of their children and grandchildren than they thought about their own political destiny. We need leaders like that today.

President Obama Weekly Address: Break the Stalemate in Congress

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama told the American people that the stalemate in Washington is holding our economy back during this make-or-break moment for the middle class.

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve been talking a lot about America’s economic future.  I’ve told you how I believe we should go about creating strong, sustained growth; how we should pay down our long-term debt in a balanced way; and most of all, what we should do right now to create good, middle-class jobs, so people who work hard can get ahead.

This isn’t some abstract debate or trivial argument.  I’ve said that this is the defining issue of our time, and I mean it.  I’ve said that this is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and I believe it.  The decisions we make over the next few years will have an enormous impact on the country we live in, and the one we pass on to our children.

Right now, we’re still fighting our way back from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.  The economy is growing again, but it’s not growing fast enough.  Our businesses have created 4.3 million new jobs over the last 27 months, but we’re not creating them fast enough.  And we’re facing some pretty serious headwinds – from the effects of the recent spike in gas prices, to the financial crisis in Europe.

President Obama Weekly Address: Put Teachers Into the Classroom

Monday, June 11th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama urged Congress to take action now to put our teachers back to work in classrooms, because the best predictor of individual and American success in this economy is a good education.

“This week, I spent some time talking with college students about how we can make higher education more affordable.  And one of the things I told them was how proud I was that they were making that investment in themselves – because in today’s economy, the best predictor of success is a good education.

That’s not just true for our individual success; it’s also true for America’s success.  New jobs and new businesses will take root wherever they can find the most highly-educated, highly-skilled workers.  And I want those workers to be American workers.  I want those good-paying, middle-class jobs to take root right here.

So it should concern everyone that right now – all across America – tens of thousands of teachers are getting laid off.  In Pennsylvania alone, there are 9,000 fewer educators in our schools today than just a year ago.  In Ohio, the number is close to 7,000.  And nationwide, over the past three years, school districts have lost over 250,000 educators.  Think about what that means for our country.  When there are fewer teachers in our schools, class sizes start climbing up.  Our students start falling behind.  And our economy takes a hit.

Republican Weekly Address: House of Representatives Focus on Jobs

Monday, June 11th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Erik Paulsen of Minnesota. Representative Paulsen highlighted the House’s focus on jobs as the president’s policies continue to make our economy worse.

“Hello, I’m Congressman Erik Paulsen from the great state of Minnesota.

“Last week the U.S. Department of Labor gave Americans some very bad news. Only 69,000 jobs were added in May, and the unemployment rate is 8.2 percent – far above the level the Obama administration promised it would be by now when the president’s “stimulus” spending bill was enacted.

“It’s clear that getting our economy going again should be job number one for everyone in Washington. Too many Americans are still having a hard time finding jobs, small businesses are struggling to create them, and there’s little mystery as to why. The president’s policies are standing in the way of a stronger economy. His health care law well may be the worst offender, driving up costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire workers. It’s making things worse in our economy, and it needs to be fully repealed.
