President Obama Weekly Address: Jobs Bill to Rehire Teachers

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama used this week’s address to discuss the critical role that education plays in America’s future. Nothing is more important to a child’s education than a great teacher. Unfortunately, tens of thousands of teachers will not be going back to school this year, partially because of budget cuts at the state and local level. That means more crowded classrooms, fewer kindergarten and preschool programs, and shorter school years and weeks.  President Obama has proposed a jobs bill that would help states prevent further layoffs and rehire teachers, but Congress refuses to pass it.

“Hi, everybody.  This week, I spent some time traveling across Iowa talking with folks about rebuilding an economy where if you work hard, you and your family can get ahead.

And along the way, I stopped in at Cascade High School to thank the teachers there for doing such a great job – and wish them luck as they head back to the classroom for this school year.

There’s nothing more important to our country’s future than the education we give our kids. And there’s no one more important to that education than the person at the front of the classroom.

Teachers matter.  Most work tirelessly, with modest pay, sometimes digging into their own pocket for school supplies – just to make a difference.  They give everything for our kids – and in return, we should invest in them. (more…)

Republican Weekly Address: Small Business Tax Hike and the Drought

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Representative Vicky Hartzler of Missouri.

Rep. Hartzler, a working farmer and small business owner, talked about the importance of taking on the big challenges facing our country, including President Obama’s small business tax hike, which according to Ernst & Young, would destroy more than 700,000 jobs. Rep. Hartzler noted that the Democratic-controlled Senate has failed to act on, among other items, House-approved measures to stop the small business tax hike and help farmers devastated by the ongoing drought.

“Hi, I’m Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler from the great state of Missouri. Just a little bit about myself: in addition to serving on the House Agriculture Committee, my husband and I own and operate a farm near Harrisonville, where we raise cattle and grow corn, wheat, and soybeans. We also run a small business that sells and services farm equipment – we’ve got three stores and about 50 employees.

“Around the country, it’s that State Fair time of year. Our fair, taking place this week in Sedalia, showcases the best of Missouri agriculture, and this year that means recognizing the perseverance of our farmers and ranchers as they face the worst drought our country has suffered in decades.

On this show the panelists first talk about the choice of Paul Ryan as the Republicans’ Vice President nominee.  The panel agree that Ryan is a free market believer and a small government proponent.  However, his selection doesn’t seem to change the focus on Governor Romney much.

However, his selection did bring a new focus to the issues surrounding Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.  The panel has a lively discussion about the two sides’ different approaches to controlling costs.

The team also discusses the advertisements that the two sides are presenting to the public.  The $716 billion mark is tossed around by both sides.

They touch on Mitt Romney’s tax returns and his claim that he has not paid less that 13% in any of the past 10 years.

The participants on the show are Eliot Spitzer who represents the left, James Glassman who represents the right, and Matt Miller, the moderator, who represents the center.

At the end of this entertaining show the participants each have a 30 second rant to summarize the issue that each sees as most significant.

President Obama Weekly Address: Administration’s Response to the Drought

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama discussed the Administration’s all-hands-on-deck approach to one of the worst droughts in more than fifty years. This drought is especially hard on farmers and ranchers who are facing poor crops and are struggling to feed their animals. That is why the Administration is doing everything possible to give them the tools to fight back and recover. The Administration has taken steps including opening more federal land for haying and grazing, giving farmers, ranchers, and small businesses access to low-interest emergency loans, and providing assistance to get more water to livestock and restore land affected by the drought.

“Hi, everybody. Today, I want to talk about something that most of you know already – it’s hot outside. It’s really hot. And if this feels worse than normal, that’s because it is. We just found out that the month of July was the warmest month on record – warmer than any other month since we began keeping track more than a century ago.

But the heat is just half the story. We’re also suffering through one of the worst droughts in over 50 years. More than a fifth of this country is experiencing what we call “extreme” or “exceptional” drought – with states like Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas getting hit harder than most.

That’s bad news for a lot of people, but it’s especially tough on our farmers. Right now, half of the corn crop in America is in poor or very poor condition. Cattle farmers are struggling to feed their animals. Many folks are seeing their livelihoods dry up in front of their eyes. And if we don’t get relief soon, Americans everywhere will start feeling the pinch, with higher prices on grocery store shelves all across the country.

Mitt Romney Selects Paul Ryan for Vice President

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

Republican ElephantMitt Romney delivered the following remarks in Norfolk, Virginia after he selected Paul Ryan to be his Vice Presidential running mate.

“Ladies and gentlemen:

“It’s great to be back in Virginia and here in Norfolk. Your city’s beauty is only matched by its proud heritage as a defender of freedom. Today we take another step forward in helping restore the promise of America. As we move forward in this campaign and on to help lead the nation to better days, it is an honor to announce my running mate and the next Vice President of the United States: Paul Ryan.

Paul Ryan is a leader.

His leadership begins with character and values. And Paul is a man of tremendous character, shaped in large part by his early life.

Paul’s father died when he was in high school. That forced him to grow up earlier than any young man should. But Paul did, with the help of his devoted mother, his brothers and sister, and a supportive community. And as he did, he internalized the virtues and hard-working ethic of the Midwest.

President Obama Weekly Address: Congratulations to Athletes in the Olympics and Paralympics

Monday, August 6th, 2012

On this weekly radio address to the nation, President Obama congratulated all of the American athletes competing in the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. These men and women have inspired us all with their hard work, determination, and their indomitable spirit as they present the best of America to the rest of the world. The President tells our Olympic and Paralympic competitors that the American people could not be prouder of them, and thanks them for reminding us that we are one people, and by working together we can achieve great things.

“Hi, everybody.  Today, I want to take a break from the back-and-forth of campaign season, and talk about something that’s brought us all together this week – the Summer Olympics.

These games remind us that for all our differences, we’re Americans first.  And we could not be prouder of the men and women representing our country in London, in both the Olympics and in the Paralympics.

Last weekend, Michelle led the American delegation to London and reaffirmed the special relationship we share with our strongest ally, Great Britain.  She met with the Queen, and with Prime Minister Cameron’s wife, Samantha.  She spent some time thanking our brave service members and military families.  And, of course, she took in as many events as she could to cheer on our athletes.

Republican Weekly Address: Prevent Taxmageddon

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Republican ElephantThe Republican Weekly Address was delivered by Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah.

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch delivers the Weekly Republican Address on the need to prevent Taxmageddon on January 1, 2013, explaining: “In just over five months, middle-class families, job creators and seniors will get hit with a massive tax hike unless the President and Congress act. This would mean that taxes would go up on virtually every single taxpaying American.”

Sen. Hatch continues: “Unfortunately, Washington Democrats’ default position appears to be to let everyone’s taxes skyrocket, if Congress doesn’t agree to their plan to raise taxes on one of the most productive segments of our economy. The group charged with representing small businesses found that 25 percent of our workforce is employed by those very small businesses that would be hit by the President’s proposed tax hikes.”

Finally he concludes: “This isn’t the time for political games and vilifying job creators. The President and his Washington allies need to stop holding America’s economy hostage in order to raise taxes on those trying to lead our economic recovery. Let’s roll up our sleeves to ensure that America remains the leader we know it to be.”
