Then the panelists talk about the surprising pick of Governor Sarah Palin as Senator McCain’s running mate.  They talk about her lack of national experience and about her accomplishments as Alaska’s governor.

The three participants on the show are Robert Scheer who represents the left, Tony Blankley who represents the right, and Matt Miller who represents the center.  Arianna Huffington who represents the progressive blogosphere is away on assignment.

What’s the Difference Between a Liberal and a Leftist?

Posted on Saturday 23 August 2008

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Mark Levine's Inside ScoopA Conservative refuses to admit the United States does anything wrong. If the Republican President does it, it’s right, even if it’s unconstitutional, immoral, and unconscionable.

A Liberal points out the horrible things the United States has done (such as invade a sovereign nation like Iraq that never attacked us and posed no threat to us) and condemns the action, along with similar actions when other countries do them (e.g. the Russia invasion of Georgia).

A Leftist points out the horrible things the United States has done, and says that because we’ve done horrible things, it’s perfectly fine for OTHER countries to do the same horrible things. Really. That’s their argument.

In my discussion today on Russia and Georgia on the Washington Pacifica station WPFW, I was somewhat surprised to hear that illogical Leftist argument from many of my callers. Since the USA has incredibly damaged moral authority under George W. Bush (a fact I don’t dispute), they argued that neither I nor any other American has the right to criticize Russia’s unprovoked takeover of large swaths of Georgia.

Huh? So if the USA tortures people, torture is OK? If the USA has secret prisons, I can’t condemn those in China?

This is why I’m a liberal, not a leftist. I can condemn Bush AND Putin; Cheney AND Ahmanidejad. And be consistent, rather than simplistic.

Really, shouldn’t anyone over the age of 16 understand that just because I despise Cheney’s policies and Cheney hates Ahmanidejad, that does NOT mean I have to love the Iranian dictator? That the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend?
