Whose suffering moves you most?

Animals? (Are you a vegetarian?)
Your family’s?
People in your neighborhood, city, or nation?
People with inadequate health care?
People suffering genocide?
People who don’t deserve suffering?
The homeless?
People of your race, religion, or ethnicity?

Professor M. S. Swaminathan has been acclaimed by TIME magazine as one of the twenty most influential Asians of the 20th century and one of the only three from India, the other two being Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. He has been described by the United Nations Environment Program as “the Father of Economic Ecology” and by Javier Perez de Cuellar, past Secretary General of the United Nations, as “a living legend who will go into the annals of history as a world scientist of rare distinction”.

A plant geneticist by training, Professor Swaminathan’s contributions to the agricultural renaissance of India have led to his being widely referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement. (more…)

Mark and Garland Nixon ask John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, about his single-payer health-care bill.

According to Mark: “How ironic that the elderly are more opposed to “Medicare for All Who Want It” than young people! Because it is precisely young people paying into the system that would strengthen Medicare for those who have it now.

What do Canada, Australia, England, France, Germany, and Japan know that we don’t know? That single-payer is not only cheaper for everyone. It also provides better care. For everyone.”

Human Rights in Chavez’s Venezuela: Interview with Gonzalo Himiob

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Today Mark Levine talks about human rights issues in Venezuela.  He points out that some dictatorships in South America come disguised as democracies.

Levine’s guest on the program is Gonzalo Himiob Santome, an active human rights lawyer in Venezuela.  Himiob has been called a “traitor to the nation” by the Venezuelan government because of his investigations of human rights violations in the country.  Himiob is a criminal law professor, writer, and lecturer.

Levine and Himiob discuss the history of the democratic process in Venezuela since 1958.  Hugo Chavez, as leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, was elected in 1998 and reelected in 2006.  Levine points out that progressives originally cheered when Chavez came to power because it was believed that he would look out for the interests of poor people of his country.  Unfortunately human rights violations have been an issue throughout his presidency.

Levine asks many questions of Himiob in an effort to understand how Chavez can be acting like a dictator yet be democratically elected.  Himiob talks about the history and results of the Constitutional Assembly that Chavez called, which overturned the previous Constitution.

There was a recall election to take Chavez out of office but the recall election failed.  Two years later he was elected to a second term.  Himiob talks about how this happened.

You’ll enjoy this podcast as Levine and Himiob create clarity about how the current government of Venezuela came to be.

Rachel Kleinfeld addresses the question of why these nations should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.  She also talks about the small amount of intelligence that we have on North Korea.  How far will China allow North Korea to go?  Does China have the leverage to effect a regime change in North Korea?

Today Mark Levine cohosts the Washington D.C. show, Dialogue,  with Terry Kester and Garland Nixon.

Today’s show is about the banks and the mortgage bill in Congress.

The panel is critical about the behavior of the banks lately.  Kester makes the comment that we are now a “nation of the banks, by the banks, and for the banks.”

The panel proposes that if every mortgage loan that is in danger of foreclosure by a bank would be modified, that the economy would benefit greatly.  The loans could be modified with benefit to the loan holder but without detriment to the bank.

The panel answers several questions from callers.

Mark Levine’s Inside Scoop on Washington

Listen NowYak with the Good Politics Radio Host

Mark Levine's Inside Scoop

Today Mark Levine talks about the U.S. Navy rescue of the captain of the Alabama from the pirates off the Somalia coast.

Levine begins his show by saying how proud he is of the rescue mission.  He then talks a little about the history of piracy at sea, especially about the history of the Barbary Coast pirates.

Levine takes a call from a caller from Sweden who disagrees with Levine on several points.  They have a long and spirited discussion.

Levine then talks about his hopes that other nations will join the U.S. in providing security in the area by defending their ships.  He asks the logical question about how to redirect the government and citizens of Somalia without invading them so that they cease to allow the protection of pirates within their borders.

Levine concludes the show by talking about nuclear weapons throughout the world.  He distinguishes between democratic nations that have or want nuclear weapons and authoritarian nations who have or want the weapons.

Levine supports the 90% tax on the bonuses that have been awarded to financial executives recently.  Lane does not support the new proposed tax.

The two adversaries discuss President Obama’s economic policies in general and then concentrate on the problems with the AIG bailout.  They talk a bit about insurance products and hedge funds to explain the problems.

Levine and Lane always have lively conversations and this one is a good example.  Lane asserts that Congress’s actions will only serve to prolong the recession and make the recovery less robust.
